Brighton promoted to the Premier League

Thanks for your company today, on what's been an extremely eventful day in the EFL.

We've had three promotions, one relegation, one managerial resignation and we probably missed a partridge in a pear tree along the way.

Congratulations to Plymouth and Portsmouth, who will be playing League One football next season, and of course to Brighton, who are into the promised land of the Premier League.

Brighton for the title?

So Brighton have been promoted, and now their attentions will turn to winning the Championship title.

They now have a seven-point gap to second-placed Newcastle with three games remaining, and the Seagulls can wrap up top spot if they beat Norwich on Friday.

We'll have live text coverage of that match here on the BBC Sport website and app.

Steve Sidwell

Brighton midfielder Steve Sidwell on BBC Sussex:

"Everyone from top to bottom has been fantastic this year on and off the pitch.

"We'll enjoy today, but we want to go that one step further and get the Championship.

"The league table doesn't lie, we deserve to be where we are. Destiny awaits."

Joe Binns: Today means so much to so many people at this fantastic club. The tears are flowing all the way from Bolivia. We are going up!

Emmanuel: Congratulations to Chris Hughton and Brighton for the promotion I hope Brighton know your value in the Premier league next season.

Tony Bloom

Brighton owner and chairman Tony Bloom on BBC Sussex:

"It's really amazing, we waited a hell of a long time for this moment, and words can't really describe it.

"The build up, every game for the last 10 or 15 games, has been absolutely great, and the players have not let us down at all.

Birmingham manager Zola resigns

#bbcefl

Ian Paul Fletcher: What a joke Zola has been; and a real insult to all the hard working people who pay for their tickets. He had to go.

David Hill: Proof as if it was needed that great players don't always make great managers. Worst decision this season sacking Rowett.

Peter Ladd: Gianfranco Zola...lovely bloke, hopeless manager. Serves Birmingham right after sacking Rowett, who did a superb job with no money.

Reaction: Brighton promoted to the Premier League

Brighton captain Bruno on BBC Sussex:

"It's been five years now for me, and it's been hard for me because we were really close to getting promoted for five seasons.

"From the first day, Brighton felt like home, not just for me but for my family as well, my wife, my kids, we're happy here.

"I came five years ago trying to get to the Premier League. And when you get it, you think about how much you worked for that. I don't have words to describe it."

FULL-TIME

Derby 1-1 Huddersfield

Huddersfield get a point in their promotion push. Collin Quaner got their early goal, but Jacob Butterfield's late equaliser kept Gary Rowett's unbeaten home record as Derby boss intact.

Huddersfield are fourth in the Championship, seven points behind second-placed Newcastle with a game in hand.

It's all over at Pride Park. Huddersfield can only draw with Derby, so Brighton are promoted to the Premier League!

Zola speaks after Birmingham resignation

Here's a flavour of what Gianfranco Zola had to say to the media after resigning as Birmingham manager.

"I'm sure you're well informed that I have decided to resign," said the Italian at a press conference.

"I'm sorry because I came here with huge expectations and the results, unfortunately, haven't been good. I take full responsibility for that.

"I'm the first one to be disappointed by results. If I feel like I cannot help the team, it's better that I leave somebody else to do that."

Butterfield scores against former club

Derby 1-1 Huddersfield

For once, Huddersfield don't clear their lines as they should and former Town midfielder Jacob Butterfield's strike from outside the box deflects in.

If it stays like this, Brighton's automatic promotion will be confirmed and the Terriers' automatic promotion hopes will look slim.

GOAL - Derby 1-1 Huddersfield

A goal celebrated on the south coast as much as in Derby...

Reaction: Brighton promoted to the Premier League

Bobby Zamora was released by Brighton last summer after a second spell at the club, but the former England striker is still delighted to see his old side back in the top flight.

Birmingham manager Zola resigns

So Gianfranco Zola has faced the media after quitting as Birmingham manager.

We'll hopefully have some reaction from him shortly.

Derby 0-1 Huddersfield

You know when I last spoke about the game and said there had only been two shots on target in the game? That has not changed.

Both managers make some substitutions but they're yet to have an impact on the game.

Derby with most of the ball and Huddersfield looking to counter quickly when they do get it.

Birmingham manager Zola resigns

According to BBC WM's Richard Wilford, we should get some reaction from Gianfranco Zola this evening, talking about his decision to step down as Birmingham manager...

There's plenty of sympathy from Birmingham City fans for former manager Gary Rowett on #bbcefl.

Mr Ripley: When your manager's doing a reet good job but you ruthlessly sack him. Well @BCFC - that one worked out well didn't it

And plenty of criticism of Gianfranco Zola as well.

Paul Marson: Zola, a great footballer who couldn't bring it as a manager. It's been a painful few months.

Scott Jones: Should have gone months ago, he's a coward who didn't want to be relegated. He should have left at the end no matter where we were.

Birmingham manager Zola resigns

Next up for Birmingham City? It's the derby against local rivals Aston Villa at Villa Park on Sunday.

Should be a quiet night in at the library. Not.

No statement from Blues yet, so we've got no idea who will be in charge for that game.

After that, it's Huddersfield at home and Bristol City away to complete the season.

Derby 0-1 Huddersfield

Not exactly a treat of free-flowing, attacking football at the moment in the late Championship game.

We've had just two shots on target. Huddersfield scored with their one.

Reaction: Portsmouth promoted to League One

FT: Notts County 1-3 Portsmouth

Christian Burgess

Portsmouth manager Paul Cook on BBC Solent Sport:

"The disappointment and the pain of losing to Plymouth in the play-offs, I can still remember it now, I can still see their lad scoring.

"To see Pompey fans celebrating like that today is something that will remain with us all for a long time.

"It is our moment now and I think we should all enjoy it."

Hamza Darby: Rowett's sacking & Zola's appointment was footballing suicide. Rowett must chuckle himself to sleep every night now.

Karl HIlls: I am absolutely over the moon that Zola has gone! Wrong man for the job! Time to fight for our survival with 3 to go #zolaout

Gianfranco Zola
Rex Features

Juppster: Zola - about time. He will go down as the worst manager in the club's history. 2 wins isn't good enough. 7th to 20th in a few months.

James Blayney: Zola's tenure as Birmingham City manager was a disaster from start to finish. Shame he didn't resign earlier as it may be too late.

Derby 0-1 Huddersfield

Not too much to report from Pride Park but it has been all Derby in the second half in terms of possession.

Huddersfield, who have lost their last seven trips to Derby, look reasonably comfortable in defence without offering much of an attacking threat.

Birmingham manager Zola resigns

Here's what some of our BBC journalists make of the news that broke just before 18:00 BST - Gianfranco Zola's resignation as manager of Birmingham City...

Spoke to one of the Birmingham hierarchy last week. Said knew they'd made a mistake sacking Rowett but was still learning about football

Sad to say it of a @premierleague legend, but one of the most disastrous appointments of all time. @BCFC #Blues… twitter.com/i/web/status/8…

Thomas Stirk: Zola took a team fighting for play-offs, to fighting for survival. Was never the right man to replace the harshly sacked Rowett.

Richard Mark Bradley: Brilliant for Brighton. Saw them come so close last season at the Riverside, I'm sure they'll be pleased to see us go the other way!

Former Chelsea and Italy forward Zola was controversially appointed in December by Birmingham's new Chinese owners.

Gary Rowett had been sacked with Blues seventh in the Championship and level on points with the team in sixth position.

It's been a steady decline since then, with Blues now firmly in a relegation battle with three games to play.

Brighton players celebrate
Rex Features
  • Brighton beat Wigan 2-1 and have been all but promoted to the Premier League. For them not to get automatic promotion, Brighton must lose their last three games and Huddersfield must win their final five, including the ongoing match at Derby, as well as affecting a 32-goal swing.
  • Newcastle lost 3-1 at Ipswich to fall seven points behind leaders Brighton.
  • Leeds lost 1-0 at home to Wolves and dropped out of the play-off places, as Reading, Sheffield Wednesday and Fulham all won.
  • Blackburn drew with Bristol City but remain in the bottom three. Defeats for Nottingham Forest and Birmingham drag them closer to the relegation zone.

HALF-TIME

Derby 0-1 Huddersfield

German striker Collin Quaner's third goal since moving to Huddersfield has them ahead at Pride Park in the best move of the game.

Derby have enjoyed a lot of the ball in that first half but have not really done much to break down a well organised defence. Matej Vydra had a half chance in injury-time from a quick free-kick.

Derby 0-1 Huddersfield

Remember that mathematics are actually stopping official confirmation of Brighton's return to the Premier League.

That's because if Huddersfield win today, win the rest of their games, Brighton lose their remaining games and the Terriers score a bag load of goals, it could all change...
