Rovers go down with 51 points

Blackburn Rovers relegated to League One

History suggests Blackburn can consider themselves pretty unlucky to have gone down with more than 50 points.

That hasn't happened since 2013, when Wolves and Peterborough went down with 51 and 54 points respectively.

As little as 41 points could have saved a team last term, and just 42 points the year before that.

But, despite going unbeaten for their final five games of this season - winning three - 51 points wasn't enough for Rovers, who go down on goal difference.

After the utter dejection of today wears off, there's some big work to be done at Blackburn Rovers as they prepare to play in League One next season.

Will there be any resolution to their off-field turmoil? Will Tony Mowbray still be manager? And which players will leave in the aftermath of relegation?

"It was not an easy place to come and win.

Blackburn relegated

In contrast to the celebrations at St James' Park, the City Ground and Ashton Gate, there is despair at Griffin Park for poor old Blackburn.

They did more than could have been expected of them today... They beat a very good Brentford side by a two-goal margin.

But who could have expected all three struggling sides to win? Other results have sent Rovers down.

FT: Aston Villa 1-1 Brighton

You have got to feel for Brighton goalkeeper David Stockdale.

The keeper has been superb all season and made a number of fine saves today but his error has handed Newcastle the title.

However, it's Premier League football next season for Brighton anyway.

Birmingham still aren't over the line yet. They're clinging on, into the 96th minute now.

If they concede, they'll go down.

Newcastle heading for the title

Aston Villa 1-1 Brighton; Newcastle 3-0 Barnsley

What have you done David Stockdale?

Jack Grealish drifts in from the left and hits a shot from 25 yards that the Seagulls keeper should stop with ease but it goes through him.

Meanwhile, Newcastle now lead 3-0 against Barnsley thanks to Dwight Gayle and, more importantly, will win the league if things stay as they are.

Six minutes of time are added on. SIX minutes!

Birmingham fans have no nails left.

Bristol City 0-1 Birmingham

Three years ago, Birmingham scored a stoppage-time goal at Bolton to stay up on the final day.

Now, as they enter stoppage time, they need to hang on.

Everyone is behind the ball for the Blues.

Aston Villa 0-1 Brighton

Great save from David Stockdale to deny Conor Hourihane's free-kick.

That was destined for the top corner.

A Villa equaliser would see Newcastle take the title.
