Farewell..

Southampton 0-1 Stoke

I will leave you with the stats.

In a nutshell, Claude Puel - criticised by some Southampton fans for a lack of entertainment - got the worst result he could have wished for. A tame and somewhat blunt offering until the late stages.

Thank you for joining me today and if you would like to read the report, click here.

I wish you a lovely summer. Enjoy it, forget football for a while and come back fresh for next term. We will have plenty on offer for you again when the Premier League gets going.

Well played.

Southampton 0-1 Stoke
.

A dire end to the season for Southampton who have now gone over seven hours without a goal at home. Will that be the end for Claude Puel?

FULL-TIME

Southampton 0-1 Stoke

Southampton 0-1 Stoke

The free-kick hits the wall which takes the sting out of things and though Steven Davis heads at goal, it's tame and held by Jack Butland.

Southampton 0-1 Stoke

Southampton will get one more chance as Jonathan Walters conceded a free-kick on the edge of the box.

Southampton 0-1 Stoke

Jack Stephens and Xherdan Shaqiri are arguing again and the Swiss international pushes his man, earning a booking.

Saints come forward but tireless work from Joe Allen wins the ball for the away side.

Four added minutes.

Southampton 0-1 Stoke

Joe Allen is teed up 18 yards out but hammers over the top. Stoke are closing in on a first away win since January.

Southampton 0-1 Stoke

It's the Jack Butland show right now. Sofiane Boufal the latest man to be thwarted. The substitute cuts in from the left and his low shot is again saved with the legs.

GREAT SAVE!

Southampton 0-1 Stoke

Southampton should be level. The once hot Manolo Gabbiadini is now cold.

He races into the clear for a ball over the top. It's a once versus one with Jack Butland and the keeper makes a superb save with his legs. What a chance.

Southampton 0-1 Stoke

Those Jack Butland saves aside, Southampton are hardly intent on pinning Stoke in. The away side win a corner and in truth this is tame.

Remember, these sides earn £1.9m for every place in the table. Stoke are jumping two places, which is a nice little pick up.

GREAT SAVE!

Southampton 0-1 Stoke

Jack Butland has just saved Stoke not once but twice. A brilliant double save. As a ball into his six-yard box is hooked away desperately, Steven Davis pounces to stab it at goal from six yards but the keeper saves low down and when James Ward-Prowse follows up, Butland does the business with his feet.

Southampton 0-1 Stoke

Jonathan Walters comes in for Mame Biram Diouf. Solid change as Walters is always going to graft and with a lead to protect, that will do little harm. Southampton are trying to up things but it doesn't look like that have another gear. Sofiane Boufal gets booked for losing the ball to Erik Pieters and instantly gripping the full-back's shirt as he raced away.

Southampton 0-1 Stoke

As it stands, Southampton will end the season ninth while Stoke will reach 12th with this win.

Jack Butland smothers a ball which ricochets tamely into his six-yard box from a free-kick delivery.

SUBSTITUTION

Southampton 0-1 Stoke

Southampton come out busy in response to that opening goal, promoting Glenn Whelan to dive into a tackle and pick up a yellow.

Manolo Gabbiadini is coming on, as is Sofiane Boufal.

GOAL - Southampton 0-1 Stoke

Peter Crouch

Crouch
Reuters

I was just preparing a graphic to show he'd only had 16 touches in the whole match. I was going to say though that he was still a threat and boy is he that.

Peter Crouch as scored many goals like this, they are food and drink to him. Geoff Cameron's hanging cross from the right just needs the treatment and Crouch duly nods it past the keeper at the back stick from six yards. Textbook.

CLOSE!

Southampton 0-0 Stoke

Mame Biram Diouf leaps 10 yards out to meet a corner and he rises way higher than anyone else but the header is well wide.

Stoke come again, Joe Allen down the left clips a lovely diagonal cross in to the box and Peter Crouch is getting ready to apply a finish but Maya Yoshida just about flicks the ball for a corner.

YELLOW CARD

Southampton 0-0 Stoke

Joe Allen and his snazzy long hair are in the book. A tangle with James Ward-Prowse. Harsh.

Southampton 0-0 Stoke

Another big Stoke chance. Xherdan Shaqiri gets on the ball 35 yards out and dinks a lovely ball over the defence as Erik Pieters makes a diagonal run from left-back. Pieters will get there six yards out but he gets nothing on it. Fraser Forster's presence in rushing out seemed to put him off as he dangled a leg at the ball. A big chance gone.

Southampton 0-0 Stoke

Charlie Austin lashes the ball into the net smartly but he's gone too early and that is offside all day long. The crowd like it, no points though I'm afraid.

Southampton 0-0 Stoke

This man has 149 Premier League wins. Only six managers have 150.

Early on in the second half here Xherdan Shaqiri and his wide shoulders are kicking off. He's had a coming together with Jack Stephens and reacts badly. Absolutely nothing in it. Southampton break over the halfway line, six versus six, but the play slows and Stoke defend things easily to earn a goal kick.

Southampton 0-0 Stoke

Xherdan Shaqiri is feeling bold as he tries to chip the goalkeeper from 25 yards. He's no Dennis Bergkamp though and that ball is heading over.

Things can only get better...

Southampton 0-0 Stoke

The players are trotting back out onto the pitch as the sun shines down. Come on lads, I gave you the big build up in the early minutes and predicted a few goals. Time to step up...

I guess in some way this sums up Southampton this season. Plenty to admire in terms of possession but no real cutting edge.

Now, a word on the Southampton pitch. Look at those swirls.

Is that a work of art or is that an eye sore which would put you off the game?

Either way we are told that this type of design will not be allowed next season. Football's authorities have had enough of such creativity. Now, where are Mulder and Scully to decipher which UFO landed here last night?

HALF-TIME

Southampton 0-0 Stoke

It's a right shame that the flurry of activity came in two minutes of added time. We were all just waking up.

CLOSE!

Southampton 0-0 Stoke

We have action aplenty at the death in this half. This is has good as it's been.

Mame Biram Diouf is denied as Cedric Soares heads off the line to keep us at stalemate.

Then at the other end, under no pressure, Jack Butland makes a hash of being in possession some 35 yards out. He's robbed by Nathan Redmond who turns and chips the ball over the keeper's head. Butland is racing back and is mighty relieved to see the ball hit the top of the bar. Much better.

Southampton 0-0 Stoke

We will have two added minutes. Xherdan Shaqiri is looking to send Stoke in in positive mood. He lifts his head to cross from the left and picks out Mame Biram Diouf at the back post but Steven Davis is in the right place to head the ball behind. Key intervention.

Charlie Austin's eyes light up in the area as a ball comes in from the right flank. He's well placed but a defender gets something on it to deny him.

Southampton 0-0 Stoke

Xherdan Shaqiri plays a one-two and collects the ball some 35 yards out. One touch, then a hit with venom, just over.

Southampton 0-0 Stoke

Southampton are splitting up the location of their attacks but it may be worth their time to focus on the left flank more. Ryan Bertrand looks in fine touch and dangerous. He's had 37 touches so far and played 29 passes, 23 of which have been in the Stoke half. He's completed 86% of his passes and looks capable of delivering a key ball.

Southampton 0-0 Stoke

As we tick past 35 minutes you can see Southampton still on top in terms of possession and territory. The best chances have been at the other end though. Stoke are well organised at the back so far. Remember, they have just one win in 10 league games, so if Southampton botch this up there could be some loud jeers.

Southampton 0-0 Stoke

If you're focused on this game and nothing else I can tell you Chelsea have substituted John Terry in the 26th minute - in line with his shirt number. He walks off in a wave of emotion as the match stops and in truth, it's all a bit silly. Here instead we have some slick football as Ryan Bertrand and Dusan Tadic play a lovely one-two. Bertrand crosses low at Charlie Austin but that is once again fine defending by Bruno Martins Indi to snuff it out at the near post.

James Ward-Prowse protests his innocence after pulling down Erik Pieters. Nothing much in it. Steven Davis however is very late with tackle moments later but in the true spirit of final day fixtures, there's no yellow.

CLOSE!

Southampton 0-0 Stoke

If Peter Crouch was a yard faster Stoke are one up. Cedric Soares under hits pass back to the keeper and the big man is galloping the ball down, he will make it but there's a foot race on with Maya Yoshida. Crouch is there first but Yoshida slides to deflect the ball behind. A yard faster and it was a one versus one. Soares breathes deeply and Yoshida absolutely laments him.

CLOSE!

Southampton 0-0 Stoke

Southampton have their best chance and it comes from a set piece. James Ward-Prowse delivered to the centre of the six-yard box but as the ball evades all the bodies, Jack Stephens has space at the back post to chest the ball and swing at it, wildly. He slices the ball back into the bodies, he didn't mean that, and it comes to nothing. A real sight of goal.

Southampton 0-0 Stoke

Oriol Romeu in Southampton's midfield has had 32 touches so far and played 26 passes. All of them have found feet. He's Mr 100% right now.
