A sign of things to come for Arsenal? Not too long to find out as the Gunners kick off the Premier League campaign against Leicester on Friday night.

That's it from us for today but be sure to catch the highlights of the Community Shield on BBC One at 22:30 BST tonight.

See you later.

'It is important to be focused for the next game'

Arsenal win the Community Shield

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte, speaking to BT Sport: "I didn't see the situation [with the sending off]. For me for this reason it is very difficult for me to say something about this decision. This is the second game, after the FA Cup, that we finish with 10 men.

"I heard there was clearly a penalty but I did not see. We are working, we are trying to do our best. We had a tough pre-season, between the six days until we start the league it is important to be focused on the next game."

A sign that Chelsea still need to strengthen? It was a brief glimpse, admittedly, but it's hard to see Alvaro Morata being a like-for-like replacement for Diego Costa. The Spain striker did not provide the same sort of physical presence in attack.

We're just waiting to hear from Antonio Conte but the Women's Euro 2017 final has been a thriller so far. It's currently 2-2 between the Netherlands and Denmark and you can follow that match here.

Post-match stats

  • This was Arsenal’s third shootout in the Community Shield, having lost their previous two against Manchester United in 1993 and 2003.
  • Chelsea have now lost their last four Community Shield matches, last winning the trophy on penalties in the 2009 edition.
  • The last two red cards issued in Community Shield matches have been to Chelsea players (Branislav Ivanovic in 2012, Pedro in 2017).
  • There were just 82 seconds between Pedro’s red card and Sead Kolasinac’s equaliser.
  • Kolasinac became the first player to open his goalscoring account for Arsenal in the Community Shield since Gilberto Silva in 2002.
  • Victor Moses scored his first goal in 27 games for Chelsea in all competitions, since netting against Tottenham in November 2016.

Elijah: Lots of Chelsea fans blaming the red, ABBA etc... Surely they aren't ignoring the fact that their gk took a penalty.

Jay: All this ABBA talk is senseless. If you're good enough to score your penalties, it really shouldn't matter.

'We want to be united and together'

Arsenal win the Community Shield

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, speaking to BT Sport: "Well, I don't know if it [Pedro] was a sending off or not but at that moment we were dominating. We had some difficult moments at the start of the second half but after that we dominated. We always looked dangerous.

"Every game is a battle in the Premier League, like today. It is a dream to make the fans happy, a difficult dream but we try hard. I would like they stand behind the team as we might go through some very good periods and some not so good periods.

"We want to be united and together throughout the season."

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte said recently he wanted to avoid a "Mourinho season", when the Blues suffered a slump after winning the Premier League title in 2014-15.

That "Mourinho season" also started with a defeat by Arsenal in the Community Shield...

Arsenal win the Community Shield

Per Mertesacker, with stitches above his right eye, lifts the Community Shield with Laurent Koscielny, who was not picked for the game.

Arsenal’s win means the FA Cup winning side has now won the last four editions of the Community Shield, with the Gunners responsible for three of those.

Watch: Courtois and Morata miss penalties as Arsenal win

Not the best start to the season when your goalkeeper steps up to take a spot kick ahead of your new £60m striker - and both miss. Arsenal on the other hand couldn't have hoped for a better shootout, scoring four out of four.

Arsenal win 4-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw with Chelsea to lift the Community Shield.

Paul Thompson: I'd flush this new ABBA system down the (Water)loo. Sorry...

Tim Marshall: The ABBA Penalty Shootout system is cool. Like tie-break Tennis! Love that!

LFCWay: To use ABBA type shootout, like tennis, it should be first to 5 with 2 clear goals? Would make it interesting.

Glum-looking Chelsea players wander up to collect their runners-up medals. They are keen to get it over and done quickly before Arsene Wenger leads his players up to collect the trophy. He's won the Community Shield seven times in his nine appearances.

Alexis Sanchez joins the celebrations on the pitch, shaking hands with all of his team-mates before waving to the Arsenal fans.

Maybe he will stick around if this trophy is the first of many but is a Community Shield win a precursor for Premier League success? Since 1992, 52% of teams that have won the traditional curtain-raiser have gone on to claim the league title in the same season.

Theo Bowyer: Savour it Arsenal... it's the only silverware you're winning all season. Peaked too early again

Sam Roberts: Great to see The FA taking a chance on the ABBA format with the penalty shootout. Arsenal, as winners, take it all!

CelebCelery: Have always hated ABBA and today just reinforces my opinion. Ditch it quickly, all the drama sucked out of a penalty shoot out.

System works?

The ABBA system is supposed to help the team going second. Arsenal did and won.

The penalty system is not that difficult to understand. If anyone did not get the memo before they will have worked it out by now.

That's it! What a turnaround as Arsenal secure their first trophy of the season, having taken the game to penalties with a late equaliser.

Watch: A 'forward's challenge'

You can make your own mind up about the Pedro red card by watching the video below.

Pedro is sent off after a foul on Mohamed Elneny.

What is ABBA, you may ask. The Swedish pop group are not about to make a sudden appearance, instead it is the penalty system that is being trialled.

The system, based on the format used in tennis tie-breaks, sees the team going first in the shootout taking one spot-kick before their opponents take two in succession.

Each team then takes two in a row until we have a winner - AB BA AB BA, hence ABBA.

FULL-TIME

Arsenal 1-1 Chelsea

All over at full-time so to penalties we go. Now we get to see ABBA...

Arsenal 1-1 Chelsea

End-to-end as both sides go for it.
