Rodgers happy with Celtic 'resilience'

FT: Partick Thistle 0-1 Celtic

More from Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers on his team's 1-0 victory.

"It is a difficult place to come, especially early in the season. Alan [Archibald] got his team well organised but we had a lot of control of the ball, we created chances but we didn't really have a finishing touch tonight.

"We will play better, of course - we were outstanding in the week [the 5-0 win over Kilmarnock] - but tonight is a game we will look back on at the end of the season and hopefully say it was a good three points.

"We could have been more comfortable in the game if we had put our chances away, but when it is still 1-0 you have to defend, and I thought the players were comfortable even though there was bit of pressure around our 18-yard box.

"We didn't quite perform as well as I would want - our standards are much higher than we showed - but it shows the resilience in the team to get the result tonight."

Was it a penalty?

FT: Partick Thistle 0-1 Celtic

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers on Radio Scotland: "I would have to see it again but from where I was, I thought Nir [Bitton] got a toe to it, and he was the right side of the defender.

"The pitch was maybe a bit slippy at that stage which is perhaps why the boy went down, but the ref was in a great position and he didn't give it."

Unsurprisingly, Thistle boss Alan Archibald took a different view.

"Yeh, I think so. It is certainly a foul anywhere else on the pitch. It is a big call, against Celtic, in the last minute of the game.

"You don't often get them. We had a penalty the other night, and we only usually get one a a year, so we're not going to get two in four days."

I thought it was a penalty. Bitton took a little chance and I thought he caught Storey when he nipped in front of him. I would like to see it again, but it was a big call by the ref

FULL-TIME - Partick Thistle 0-1 Celtic

So Celtic survive, and it's two wins out for two for the Scottish champions, who extend their unbeaten domestic run to 51 matches.

That's two defeats out of two for Thistle, who can consider themselves a touch hard done by.

Thistle denied penalty claim

Partick Thistle 0-1 Celtic

Three minutes of injury time signalled. Surely a penalty for Thistle? No! Referee Andrew Dallas deems Nir Bitton's challenge on Miles Storey accidental, but it looked pretty clear-cut to everyone else.

"It looked like a stonewall penalty to me," says ex-Thistle boss Ian McCall on radio Scotland. "I can't disagree," says Pat Bonner.

CLOSE!

Partick Thistle 0-1 Celtic

Celtic break and Leigh Griffiths zones in on goal. He gets a shot away with his left foot but a great challenge from Niall Keown's timely challenge concedes a corner.

Partick Thistle 0-1 Celtic

Loose play from Celtic captain Scott Brown, who concedes an unnecessary corner by over-playing his hand.

Can Thistle capitalise and force an equaliser? Er, no. Chris Erskine's corner floats harmlessly over everyone.

YELLOW CARD

Partick Thistle 0-1 Celtic

Kieran Tierney, exemplary for most of the evening, blots his copybook slightly by picking up a late booking for impeding Thistle's Ryan Edwards.

Throwing Connor Sammon right up top and getting the ball forward from back to front as quickly as possible might be Thistle's best bet in this last five minutes

Final change for Thistle

Partick Thistle 0-1 Celtic

Last throw of the dice from Alan Archibald, sending Andy McCarthy on for the tiring Stuart Bannigan.

Partick Thistle 0-1 Celtic

Nearly a disaster for Thistle debutant Connor Sammon, who diverts a Celtic corner back towards his own goal, but it is cleared off the line.

CLOSE!

Partick Thistle 0-1 Celtic

James Forrest drives forward through the middle, feeds Tom Rogic outside him on the left. The Aussie lets fly with his left foot, but hits the side-netting. Still 1-0...

Armstrong on for Celtic

Partick Thistle 0-1 Celtic

Jozo Simunovic is unhappy after conceding a free-kick for catching Ryan Edwards on the back of his ankle, but it comes to nothing. The Croat is then forced into a change of shirt, with blood spattering his original.

Celtic make their final substitution, Stuart Armstrong - subject of recent transfer speculation linking him with a move to Southampton - on for Olivier Ntcham.

YELLOW CARD

Partick Thistle 0-1 Celtic

Thistle's Stuart Bannigan is the first man into the book, sticking out a leg to bring James Forrest's run to a halt.

CLOSE!

Partick Thistle 0-1 Celtic

Jozo Simunovic gets decent power on a header from a Leigh Griffiths corner, but Thistle's Callum Booth heads it away off his own line.

Partick Thistle 0-1 Celtic

Celtic's Leigh Griffiths gets free down the right and pulls the ball back for Tom Rogic, but a defender does just enough to put the Aussie off, and he blazes wide.

Erskine on for Thistle

Partick Thistle 0-1 Celtic

Thistle boss Alan Archibald responds by sending on his own talisman, Chris Erskine, who has scored twice in the past week. He replaces Steven Lawless.

Double change for Celtic

Partick Thistle 0-1 Celtic

Leigh Griffiths started on the bench tonight, with one eye on next Wednesday's Champions League qualifier against Astana.

But the in-form striker is on now, and so is Tom Rogic as Brendan Rodgers chases a second goal that would probably put the game to bed. Callum McGregor and Jonny Hayes make way.

Storey-book debut?

Partick Thistle 0-1 Celtic

That's Kris Doolan's work done. One chance, one miss, and he's taken off, replaced by the second of Thistle's two new signings today, Miles Storey.

Celtic will be really disappointed with that, from a defensive point of view. Doolan was given a free header, in the centre of the box.

CLOSE!

Partick Thistle 0-1 Celtic

Should have been an equaliser! Great ball in from Christie Elliott, and Kris Doolan heads over from six yards out, all alone. Wonderful chance, wasted.

CLOSE!

Partick Thistle 0-1 Celtic

It's that man Tierney again. Thistle's Christie Elliott gives it away carelessly, and the 20-year-old is onto in a flash, surging forward and into the Partick penalty area, but he pulls his effort across the face of the goal.

Ouch!

Partick Thistle 0-1 Celtic

Celtic's Kieran Tierney takes a whack on the back of the neck from Kris Doolan's elbow as he jumps for an aerial challenge. The left-back takes a while to get up from it, but he's back up and running again...

Partick Thistle 0-1 Celtic

Almost a half-chance for Thistle, their first of the game. A couple of neat passes in midfield, Callum Booth floats in a decent cross from the left, but Kris Doolan's header barely troubles Craig Gordon, who's had a very quiet evening in the Celtic goal.

Moments later, Christie Elliott cuts inside on the right flank onto his left foot but fires well over.

Partick Thistle 0-1 Celtic

The players are back out, the floodlights are on at Firhill, and we're back under way for the second half...

Change for Thistle in second half?

Partick Thistle 0-1 Celtic

Thistle should bring Chris Erskine on while they still have a chance. If it goes to 2-0, it is probably too late. I'd expect to see him on after 60-65 minutes if it is still 1-0

Sammon subdued on Thistle debut

Partick Thistle 0-1 Celtic

Conor Sammon is making his Partick Thistle debut this evening, but he has seen little or no ball in and around the penalty area, where his new manager Alan Archibald was hoping he might bring some "physicality" to proceedings.

HALF-TIME - Partick Thistle 0-1 Celtic

Bit of debate about whose goal it should be - Ntcham's or Brown's - with some arguing it deflected off the Celtic captain's arm, though not necessarily intentionally.

Either way, the champions are on their way to a 19th win out of 20 against Thistle.

Much ado about one-nothing, as the legend that is Chic Young has just pronounced.

Partick Thistle 0-1 Celtic

Approaching half-time...Celtic in command, controlling the game, but Thistle hustling and harrying to ensure it's not a complete stroll in Maryhill just yet.

Partick Thistle 0-1 Celtic

Out of nowhere, a corner for the hosts, their first of the match. Stuart Bannigan sends it spiralling in, but Mikael Lustig heads it clear.

CLOSE!

Partick Thistle 0-1 Celtic

Cracking ball in from the right from Mikael Lustig and Scott Brown climbs highest to send a looping header just over the top.

Partick Thistle 0-1 Celtic

Thistle's Ryan Edwards goes in hard on Scott Brown, clipping the back of the Celtic captain's legs, and it's a free-kick to the champions. And now a corner...Jonny Hayes takes it, cleared, but another corner ensues...

Partick Thistle 0-1 Celtic

Neat one-two between Kieran Tierney and Callum McGregor on the left of the area. Tierney clips in an inviting cross, but Thistle manage to clear the danger.

Celtic pressing for a second though...

GOAL - Partick Thistle 0-1 Celtic (Ntcham)

Thistle appeared to clear the corner, but the ball fell to Olivier Ntcham on the edge of the area, and the Frenchman thumped a volley past Cerny. It took a slight deflection on the way in, off Celtic captain Scott Brown.

Partick Thistle 0-0 Celtic

Free-kick to Celtic, about 28 yards out, central position. Nir Bitton steps up and curls one past the wall, but Tomas Cerny beats it away for a corner.

Partick Thistle 0-0 Celtic

Thistle answer Pat Bonner's call, and launch their first attack of note, but Celtic centre-back Jozo Simunovic deals with it comfortably enough.

Partick Thistle 0-0 Celtic

Pat Bonner

Celtic are controlling the game. Partick Thistle are really struggling, they somehow need to get themselves into this game. They need a throw-in, a corner, something to get them into Celtic's half.
