Farewell

FT: Birmingham City 1-0 Cardiff City; Bristol City 0-0 Burton Albion

Birmingham celebrate
PA

Well it's been quite a night if you're a Birmingham City fan. Steve Cotterill celebrated a win in his first game in charge of the club and they've moved out of the Championship bottom three courtesy of their victory against league-leaders Cardiff City.

The Bluebirds just didn't look as good tonight as they have done this season and Neil Warnock will be disappointed with his side's performance.

Elsewhere, Burton Albion will be more than happy with a draw against in-form Bristol City, who missed the chance to go second with a win against the Brewers.

A reminder that we will have all of Saturday's EFL action coming your way tomorrow, including Wolves' huge local derby against Aston Villa.

For now, though, thank you for joining us.

A marker put down

FT: Birmingham City 1-0 Cardiff City

Birmingham City striker Isaac Vassell told Sky Sports:

"It's massive for Che Adams and the manager. We've had a hard week and we've also worked hard and it paid off.

"It was massively important that Che scored. He's always sharp in training and we held it out for the rest of the game so it's brilliant for him."

Birmingham City's Michael Morrison told Sky Sports:

"There's not a team anywhere that's worked harder in the last two weeks. It's paid dividends. You have to chase everything until the last minute.

"Not only have we worked on fitness, we were organised. Everyone stuck with it, there were a few late bodies who came on and we looked good.

"We've got to get some momentum going, we've got a tough game next week and we've put a marker down with this result."

FULL-TIME

Birmingham City 1-0 Cardiff City

There's a battle in the Birmingham City box as Cardiff try to work a late goal. They win a corner in the melee that ensues and it's cleared by the hosts.

Then the whistle blows and they've done it. Steve Cotterill gets his Birmingham City tenure under way with a win against the league leaders.

FULL-TIME

Bristol City 0-0 Burton

What a great point for Burton! After successive 4-0 home defeats they keep their third-straight Championship clean sheet on the road.

Brewers boss Nigel Clough must like Ashton Gate - he's now unbeaten there in his last six visits.

CLOSE!

Bristol City 0-0 Burton

So close for Bristol City!

Marlon Pack tries his luck from distance but it's just the wrong side of the post.

Bristol City 0-0 Burton

Time is running out for Bristol City to find a winner as they can't get through a resolute Burton defence.

There will be four minutes of stoppage time.

Birmingham City 1-0 Cardiff City

Well, that being said, Aron Gunnarsson is now coming off. In the mean time, Birmingham boss Steve Cotterill sends on Lukas Jutkiewicz in place of Che Adams.

Five minutes of added time to play.

Birmingham City 1-0 Cardiff City

Panic over, Cardiff City fans. Aron Gunnarsson has made his return to the pitch. They have two minutes of normal time to find a leveller.

Birmingham City 1-0 Cardiff City

Blues boss Steve Cotterill gives David Davis a tactical piece of paper to hand to Che Adams. The striker then rushes into the box as Birmingham press for another goal and Cardiff's Aron Gunnarsson tries to trip him up and seems to injure his ankle in the process.

Deary me. There's a delay in play as he receives treatment and Cardiff are down to 10 men as they've made all their substitutions.

Bristol City 0-0 Burton

Two chances for Burton's Marvin Sordell.

First he shoots wide after a rapid counter-attack, before seeing another effort headed away by Aden Flint.

Are we in for late drama?

Bristol City 0-0 Burton

Bristol City haven't created as many opening in the second half.

There's an opportunity here as Bobby Reid lays off a pass to Jonathan Leko but the on-loan West Brom winger's cross aimed at Cauley Woodrow is gathered by Stephen Bywater.

Birmingham City 1-0 Cardiff City

Kenneth Zohore plays a lovely back heel to Nathaniel Mendez-Laing who's almost clear on goal but Michael Morrison puts in a fine tackle to neutralise Cardiff's attack.

A penny for this man's thoughts as Cardiff have 13 minutes to avoid a second league defeat of the season.

BBC Sport at St Andrew's

Even with over 1,000 noisy but annoyed travelling fans present for the visit of the league leaders to St Andrew's, the Friday night switch to accommodate the live TV cameras means the gate of 19,059 is actually Blues' lowest league crowd of the season.

But it isn't stopping the clearly very happy home fans on the Tilton End making a lot of noise themselves.

And, on this impressive evidence, it will be even louder and with even more here for Blues' next home game in 16 days' time.... against Steve Bruce's Aston Villa!

Bristol City 0-0 Burton

Is this going to be Bristol City's night or not?

Bobby Reid has the ball in the net but it's ruled out for an earlier foul on Luke Murphy.

Bristol City 0-0 Burton

Jonathan Leko is the latest home player to be denied as a Burton defender gets in the way of another shot to concede a corner, which Bristol City can't take advantage of.

Birmingham City 1-0 Cardiff City

Cardiff look all over the place, here. Isaac Vassell is causing himself such a nuisance in front of goals and the Bluebirds' back line are having trouble dealing with the Birmingham striker.

The volume level cranks up at Ashton Gate as Marlon Pack - who came on for Korey Smith - fired a free-kick into the box but Luke Murphy clears.

Bristol City lost Korey Smith to injury just before the break and now head coach Lee Johnson makes his second change, replacing Niclas Eliasson with Jonathan Leko.

Burton haven't offered too much of a threat tonight but Luke Varney has Frank Fielding scrambling across his goal with a shot from distance which goes the wrong side of the post.

Birmingham City 1-0 Cardiff City

Kenneth Zohore sends in a lovely pass to the onrushing Junior Hoilett at the far post and Michael Morrison pulls off a terrific tackle to stop the Cardiff striker from scoring what would have been a certain close-range finish.

Fantastic stuff.

Birmingham City 1-0 Cardiff City

Wow. A game of pinball in the Cardiff box sees Che Adams almost score from close range before Joe Ralls then almost puts the ball into his own net.

How Birmingham City aren't 2-0 up I do not know.

Bristol City 0-0 Burton

A relatively slow start to the second half, although Famara Diedhiou wins Bristol City a free-kick on the edge of the box.

Jamie Patertson tries his luck but his set-piece sails narrowly over.

Birmingham City 1-0 Cardiff City

Oof. Birmingham City striker Isaac Vassell has a go from long range but he fires straight at Neil Etheridge.

That's livened up the opening few minutes of the second half.

Birmingham City 1-0 Cardiff City; Bristol City 0-0 Burton Albion

We are back under way for the second half in both of tonight's Championship games.

Truro City FC

It's the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup tomorrow and National League South side Truro City are aiming to end Cornwall's 48-year wait for a team in the first round.

The draw for the first round takes place live on BBC Two on Monday, 16 October from 19:00 BST.

Steve Cotterill celebrates

So far all going to script for new Birmingham City boss Steve Cotterill. He promised a lot of hard work and battling spirit - and he's certainly got that.

He also challenged his side before the game by saying he had inherited a team with potential rather than quality - but he got an immediate riposte to that in the form of Che Adams' superb solo goal.

Cardiff boss Neil Warnock will no doubt moan about the marking and lack of challenges afterwards. But sometimes you just have to stand back and applaud goals like that.

HALF-TIME

Bristol City 0-0 Burton

Half-time at Ashton Gate too where we remain goalless.

The home side have had 72% possession, six shots (three on target) and seven corners to zip.

But Burton are hanging on in there. Is this one that Nigel Clough's side might nick in the second half?

Bristol City boss Lee Johnson can't believe it.

HALF-TIME

Birmingham City 1-0 Cardiff City

Sol Bamba concedes a free-kick for bringing down Isaac Vassell, which is initially cleared but despite Blues' efforts to work it back towards goal, Che Adams concedes a goal kick and the referee promptly blows his whistle for half-time.

Birmingham City 1-0 Cardiff City

Cardiff keep turning the key and there's some lovely last-ditch defending from Jonathan Grounds as Junior Hoilett tries his luck from close range, which the Birmingham City defender keenly blocks.

Big chance for Neil Warnock's side, that was.

Bristol City 0-0 Burton

Burton keeper Stephen Bywater is called into action again to tip away Josh Brownhill's effort for another corner.

Luke Varney gets his head to it to partially clear the danger before Hope Akpan completes the job for the Brewers.

Birmingham City 1-0 Cardiff City

Junior Hoilett receives the ball near the halfway line and darts unopposed up the right wing and lets a shot fly from long-range.

But it goes well wide of the mark and the Cardiff City man is jeered by the home crowd.

Bristol City 0-0 Burton

Five corners for Bristol City now but still no reward.

Burton defending stoutly - and remember they kept clean sheets at both Norwich and QPR last month.

Che Adams

They might be decked out in owner Vincent Tan's favourite colours, but Neil Warnock's table-topping Cardiff Reds are so far finding it hard work on a ground where they have not only not won but not even scored on their last three visits.

Blues have certainly made a lively start under their new manager.

Fit-again Che Adams had already looked a threat even before marking his first start in two months with such a superb solo effort of a goal. It's sort of cutting edge that Fulham were reportedly ready to shell out £10m for on deadline day. And it's clear to see why he's been missed!

Bristol City 0-0 Burton

Half an hour gone at Ashton Gate and we're still waiting for a breakthrough.

Still the home side try but Joe Bryan has a drive deflected off target by Ben Turner's block.

Burton midfielder Luke Murphy needs treatment for a back injury, but after treatment he's ok to continue.

Birmingham City 1-0 Cardiff City

David Davis plays a nice cross into the box that flies just over the top of goal. Che Adams picks it up after Cardiff fail to clear and thunders another shot but this time it's blocked by a Bluebirds defender.

Steve Cotterill's side are well up for this!

Birmingham City 1-0 Cardiff City

Big chance for Cardiff goes begging. Junior Hoilett tries to play Kenneth Zohore through on goal from close range but Maxime Colin is on hand to clear the danger.

That's the Championship leaders' best chance of the game so far.
