Wolves leave pack chasing

Rex Features

That's your lot from us tonight.

Wolves end the day five points clear of the chasing pack after a comfortable 4-1 win over Leeds.

Meanwhile, Middlesbrough move up sixth with a 2-0 win over lowly Birmingham and Sheffield Wednesday score a last minute equaliser to draw 2-2 with Ipswich.

Many thanks for your company this evening and we'll be back on Saturday.

'We nicked a point in the end'

FT: Ipswich 2-2 Sheff Wed

We didn't play the best today but we nicked a point in the end. It's always a tough place to come so we'll take it and go again Saturday.

'Wolves will win the league'

FT: Wolves 4-1 Leeds

Noel Whelan

Ex-Leeds United striker

"Wolves are going to win this league. From what I have seen they are by far the best team in this division. They have spent big on excellent players.

"That's the difference, they have excellent players and we have very good ones.

"Leeds still showed heart and spirit and that they have the right attitude.

"We've got to put this behind us now."

'Leeds have to move on quickly'

FT: Wolves 4-1 Leeds

Noel Whelan

Ex-Leeds United striker

"Leeds would have taken six points from three games at the start of the week.

"Barnsley is a difficult place to go to and we are going to have to be up for the fight and win our individual battles."

Ipswich 2-2 Sheff Wed

Ipswich are denied at the death!

Atdhe Nuhiu's header in the final minute of time added on has pinched a point for Sheffield Wednesday.

'Wolves very, very good'

FT: Wolves 4-1 Leeds

Noel Whelan

Ex-Leeds United striker

"Tonight Wolves looked like they could punish a lot of sides

"When they break they have a lot of quality going forward. They're just a very, very good outfit."

Oh lordy, Sheffield Wednesday are level!

Atdhe Nuhiu, the big forward thrown on to rescue a draw, heads in at the far post and the Owls are heading back to South Yorkshire with a precious point.

Ipswich 2-1 Sheff Wed

Two and a half minutes down, two and a half minutes to go. Still Ipswich frustrate Sheffield Wednesday by keeping the ball in the corners.

And, when Wednesday finally do win it back, Steven Fletcher launches a hopeful effort high into the stand.

Middlesbrough 2-0 Birmingham

It's full-time at the Riverside, where Britt Assombalonga's brace has given Middlesbrough a comfortable victory over lowly Birmingham City.

Wolves 4-1 Leeds

Rex Features

A few weeks ago some people were questioning whether Wolves' excellent start could last through autumn and winter... They're probably not questioning it now.

The hosts were largely untroubled throughout after taking the lead through a Barry Douglas free-kick.

Ivan Cavaleiro made it 2-0 at the break before Ezgjan Alioski pulled one back with a fine strike.

Leeds were reduced to 10 men when Ronaldo Vieira saw red for a second bookable offence and Wolves wrapped up the win with goals from Diogo Jota and a Helder Costa penalty.

Wolves are five points clear at the top of the table and in serious danger of running away from the rest of the pack.

Ipswich 2-1 Sheff Wed

There are groans around the ground as the fourth official shows five minutes of stoppage time on his electronic board.

Ipswich 2-1 Sheff Wed

We're into the final throes at Portman Road. Is there a late sting in the tail? Ipswich are doing a decent job of seeing this one out so far...

Wolves 4-1 Leeds

What a season this has been for table-topping Wolves so far.

They're going five points clear of third-placed Sheffield United, they've scored more than anyone else in the division and have the best goal difference.

They're just coasting through the final few minutes of this game against 10-man Leeds.

'The South Bank are back in full voice'

Wolves 4-1 Leeds

Ged Scott

BBC Sport at Molineux

"After that early second-half strike from Ezgjan Alioski, it went rather nervily quiet inside Molineux for a good while - even after Wolves were given their one-man advantage.

"But those goals from Jota and Helder Costa's penalty have restored the South Bank to full voice. And the Joy Division inspired chant of 'Leeds have fallen apart again' proved so popular it got taken up by the North Bank too!

"It's now a mostly very happy crowd of 28,914."

Middlesbrough 2-0 Birmingham

While the goals have been flying in since half-time the West Midlands and Suffolk, it's remained 2-0 in the north east.

Patrick Bamford has come closest to changing that situation, but flashed a shot narrowly wide for the hosts.

Wolves 4-1 Leeds

With the game wrapped up Wolves make a double change.

Midfielders Ruben Neves and Romain Saiss exit to be replaced by Jack Price and Alfred N'Diaye.

GOAL - Wolves 4-1 Leeds

Helder Costa (76 mins)

This could get ugly for Leeds now.

Goalkeeper Andy Lonergan made a good save from Diogo Jota but couldn't hold onto the shot and ended up upending Leo Bonatini in the area.

Sub Helder Costa confidently scores from the penalty.

Wolves are going four points clear at the top.

Wolves 3-1 Leeds

Leeds goalkeeper Andy Lonergan's night has just got even worse.

GOAL - Ipswich 2-1 Sheff Wed

Martyn Waghorn (70 mins)

Fantastic header!

Just as the momentum seemed to be swinging the way of the visitors, Ipswich break and, after the second phase seems to fizzle out, Emyr Huws steers a cross in for Martyn Waghorn and the ex-Rangers man does the rest.

GOAL - Wolves 3-1 Leeds

Diogo Jota (72 mins)

Surely game over now.

Leeds get themselves into a bit of a mess at the back and Diogo Jota makes no mistake with a well-measured finish.

Wolves 2-1 Leeds

Leeds make a double change as they look to see if they can find an improbable equaliser.

Kemar Roofe and Pablo Hernandez make way for Caleb Ekuban and Eunan O'Kane.

Wolves make their first change of the game, with goalscorer Ivan Cavaleiro coming off in place of Helder Costa.

GOAL - Ipswich 1-1 Sheff Wed

Gary Hooper (64 mins)

Gary Hooper smashes it brutally into the corner and, moments after Freddie Sears wasted that chance for 2-0, Sheffield Wednesday are level.

Wolves 2-1 Leeds

Ten-man Leeds are still pushing for that equaliser.

Samuel Saiz takes a chance from long range but John Ruddy makes a competent save.

Ipswich 1-0 Sheff Wed

Jordan Spence handles in the area and Wednesday have a penalty!

Ipswich 1-0 Sheff Wed

Freddie Sears has a great chance to double Ipswich's advantage at Portman Road, going clean through on goal and going round Keiren Westwood, but then allowing the Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper to recover and snuff out the opportunity.

Middlesbrough 2-0 Birmingham

Fabio da Silva very nearly makes it 3-0 to Middlesbrough, but his deflected effort from inside the area comes back off the crossbar.

RED CARD Ronaldo Vieira (Leeds)

Wolves 2-1 Leeds

Ronaldo Vieira
Rex Features

Just when Leeds were really threatening to get back into the game they find themselves down to 10 men.

Young midfielder Ronaldo Vieira was booked in the first half and he's shown a second yellow for a poor tackle on Diogo Jota.

Middlesbrough 2-0 Birmingham

Birmingham are having a right good go despite trailing at Middlesbrough, as Jonathan Grounds' header deflects behind and then goalkeeper Darren Randolph just about punches the subsequent corner clear.

Wolves 2-1 Leeds

Some sloppy play from Wolves sees them give up possession in their own half but Leeds can't take advantage.

Much better from Leeds this half and Wolves are on the ropes just at the moment.

'Leeds have their tails up'

Wolves 2-1 Leeds

Noel Whelan

Ex-Leeds United striker

"That goal has lifted our confidence. We've got our tails up now.

"It's a key goal because had it gone 3-0 it would have been all over.

"We're being much more aggressive and getting in their faces now. We're not letting them play their silky passes."

Ipswich 1-0 Sheff Wed

In the blink of an eye, this game has become incredibly stretched. Twice Jordan Rhodes has a sniff of goal as the Ipswich defence goes walkies, but he can't make either chance count.

GOAL - Ipswich 1-0 Sheff Wed

Joe Garner (48 mins)

Joe Garner
Rex Features

And what a start to the second half!

Straight from kick-off, Martyn Waghorn wriggles through and very nearly puts the hosts in front but sees his shot deflected behind.

They're not to be denied, however, as Joe Garner pokes home at the far post from the resulting corner. Ipswich are ahead.

Ipswich 0-0 Sheff Wed

Now then, what's going on here?

David McGoldrick has come out for the second half but, after hobbling around looking less than comfortable, he heads for the tunnel and makes way for Freddie Sears before we kick off.

All a bit odd.

GOAL - Wolves 2-1 Leeds

Ezgjan Alioski (48 mins)

Leeds have certainly found a way back into the game at Molineux!

Ezgjan Alioski crashes home a fierce effort from a great ball behind the Wolves defence.

Middlesbrough 2-0 Birmingham

We're also under way at the Riverside, where Middlesbrough will be hoping to build on their 2-0 lead and Birmingham will be hoping for a way back into the game.

Wolves 2-0 Leeds

Back under way at Molineux.

Can Leeds find a way back into this?

'Nightmare return for Lonergan'

Wolves 2-0 Leeds

Ged Scott

BBC Sport at Molineux

Rex Features

"Half-time at Molineux. Wolves in control against Leeds.

"And, so far, it's not quite the night former Wolves keeper Andy Lonergan might have hoped for on his first return since his August departure to Elland Road.

"He was beaten all ends up by a stunning left-foot free kick from Wolves' dead ball specialist Barry Douglas. Then, 11 minutes later, he got an outstretched arm to the ball but was beaten by the sheer ferocity of Ivan Cavaleiro's left-foot shot for the second goal. He had been left rather exposed by his defence though.

"Not much sign of hope that the visitors might add to their successive wins here over the last two seasons."
