See ya.

British Grand Prix preview

Finally, remember to listen in to the British Grand Prix preview at 20:00 BST, when Jennie Gow sits down with Lewis Hamilton.

After the latest collision with Nico Rosberg, it should make for interesting listening.

Raikkonen re-signs

In case you missed it from this morning, Ferrari have re-signed Kimi Raikkonen as team-mate to Sebastian Vettel for the 2017 Formula 1 season.

The 36-year-old's future had been in doubt as the team considered whether he had done enough to earn a fourth consecutive season with the team.

They have decided that he is the best option as support to four-time world champion Vettel, who leads their team.

It will be a seventh year at Ferrari for the Finn, who won their last drivers' title in 2007.

It was arguably the most famous season in Formula 1 history, featuring thrilling racing, off-track controversies and the near-death of the sport's most famous driver, Niki Lauda, as he battled James Hunt for the world championship.

Through the long, hot summer of 1976 Hunt's attempt to claw back a huge points deficit to reigning champion Lauda was big news in Britain.

However, almost the entire season - including the British Grand Prix - was not broadcast on television in the UK because one of the cars was sponsored by a condom manufacturer.

BBC Sport tells the story of how a forward-thinking contraception company led to an F1 blackout, as the sport draped itself in cigarette advertising.

I would absolutely love to carry on with all these Top Gun quotes, but we're heading towards wrapping things up here. Before we do go, here's a couple of things worthy of your attention...

On what we've seen today, Red Bull are the ones that are going to take the fight to Mercedes this weekend.

"Slow in please, slow in. Avoid changing gear," comes the message over the radio to Daniel Ricciardo.

He finishes the session second fastest, but does that suggest all is not as well as they would like?

Chequered flag

The chequered flag falls and Lewis Hamilton finishes the day fastest of all.

Nico Rosberg, meanwhile, failed to get out in this session.

Three minutes to go in second practice, and the day is going to belong to Lewis Hamilton.

Jenson Button's finally getting more than the odd lap in now. He's on the soft compound and has the need, the need for speed.

He finally puts in a representative lap time as he crosses the line with a time of 1:33.763. That puts him P9, 0.8s down on his McLaren team-mate Fernando Alonso, who is P6.

#bbcf1 What you did was an incredibly brave thing. What you should have done is let Lewis past. You don't own that car, Mercedes do #TopGun

Good stat from Jennie Gow - Lewis Hamilton has always won the world championship when he's won the British Grand Prix - 2008, 2014 and 2015.

Game over if he wins this weekend, then?

'Major' problem for Rosberg?

Allan McNish

BBC Radio 5 live Formula 1 analyst

"The gearbox is off Rosberg's car. It is obviously a major issue. Everyone is happy on one side of the garage and the other side looks like having a long night ahead of them."

We've been waiting for the Force Indias to do quali runs, but it turns out that they aint going to do them. Not in this session anyway, because the team just told Jennie Gow that they did their qualifying sim in FP1.

Jenson Button's been doing the hokey cokey in the session. He's been in, out, in, out. Once again he pops out for a solitary lap, complains about "unbelievably low grip" before heading back in.

"I have to fight the whole time," he says.

Not good.

Kimi Raikkonen has just come in, taken off the hard tyres and put on a set of softs. We should now be able to see the time delta between Raikkonen and Vettel.

Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen, as is often the case this season, are on different compounds at this stage of second practice. Vettel is on the medium tyres, while Raikkonen has just completed a 16-lap stint on the hard tyres.

#bbcf1 Merc Driver penalties...both should be forced to listen to Steps and Crazy Frog for the entire race

I've just been transported back to 2006 with this comment. Agree, though. That is a worthy punishment.

Andrew Benson

Chief F1 writer at Silverstone

It is very interesting looking at the lap times here. Initially in the run, Hamilton is much, much faster than everyone else. He is one or more seconds quicker than everyone else on the soft tyre.  As the run goes on he drops off to 1:35-1:37 very quickly whereas the Red Bulls keep up a decent pace in the 1:36s. On average there is only a tenth or two in with Hamilton and Ricciardo and Verstappen. It could potentially be interesting.

Kimi Raikkonen goes straight off at Becketts. There's a crosswind there and it looks to be causing the drivers a bit of a problem.

All is clearly not well with Jenson Button's McLaren at the moment.

"Jenson back off please back off. We need to box," comes the message over the radio.

"Very strange power. It's holding me back," is Button's reply.

Pretty much everyone is cracking on with some long runs now, although the Force India pair of Nico Hulkenberg and Sergio Perez - 14th and 15th respectively - are yet to slip on the soft boots.

McLaren making inroads

Tom Clarkson

BBC Radio 5 live commentator

It is proof that McLaren are making serious inroads. McLaren are closing the gap on the guys at the front. Instead of being at the back of the midfield, they are now in the middle of the midfield.

Contrasting fortunes at McLaren. Jenson Button is propping up the timesheet and has only managed a handful of laps, but Fernando Alonso is going very well. Very well indeed. He is P6, within 1.3s of Lewis Hamilton and just 0.7s off Kimi Raikkonen's best time.

After a disastrous season last season, McLaren appear to be making genuine progress.

Ah, Verstappen scuffs it through the second sector and he slots in P3 after a 1:32.286. He's behind Daniel Ricciardo, who is four tenths down on Lewis Hamilton.

A good weekend for Red Bull on the cards?

That's some crucial track time lost for Nico Rosberg. Not a good start to the weekend at all.

Meanwhile, Max Verstappen is on a fast lap. He's faster than Lewis Hamilton through the first sector...
