No better way to finish than with that comment just below. If Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg finish tomorrow's race where they start, then the gap in the title race will be down to just one point. The heat is very much on in Malaysia.

Join us for build up to the race from 06:30 BST tomorrow. I'll leave you with Andrew Benson's qualifying report. Until next time, goodbye.

It's a big test for Lewis Hamilton tomorrow. He has more pole positions than any other drivers this season with eight but he has kept a lap-one lead just twice in his previous seven pole position starts.

Nick Hughes: Here's hoping for a wet race tomorrow to shake #Mercedes off the front for either a Button or #Ferrari win.

Rachel T: Nothing wrong with either car and HAM thumps ROS. Now for the clutch tomorrow!

Ton up for Hamilton

'It will be close'

More from Lewis Hamilton, about the threat of the Red Bull and the Ferraris: "They will be very quick. If the conditions are like this the track is better, a lot smoother, and it will be close for sure because they have good long runs."

'Race pace is promising'

Max Verstappen, who qualified third: “I don’t know if we can beat them (Mercedes). This weekend there has been positive changes after Singapore. Long race pace is promising, we needed to improve the short work today and we did that.”

'Still optimistic'

Nico Rosberg, who took second: "I was going for pole, what else would I be doing out there? I woluld have come close but made a mistake at the last corner. I couldn't get the settings right at the last corner. Second place doesn't mean victory is not possible, we have seen that many times. I am still optimistic for tomorrow."

Nico Rosberg (left) qualified second for the Malaysian Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton just trying to deliver a little psychological blow to Nico Rosberg with that "could have been faster" line there...

'Could have been faster'

Lewis Hamilton, who took pole position: "Definitely pleased. Big thanks to all fans who turned up. A lot of British flags. Secondly, huge thanks to the team. We have improved. We’ve come here with the best the car has been this year. Great work done coming into this weekend. Could have been a faster lap."

Lewis Hamilton

Three successive pole positions for Lewis Hamilton and four in total. He is now second in the all-time list in Malaysia behind Michael Schumacher (five).

Just one victory for the Briton though.

Rosberg will be frustrated with how that turned out because he is a long way off his team-mate.

That was a superb performance from Hamilton while Rosberg was lucky to get away with that mishap at the last corner. That lap was all about damage limitations for Rosberg.

Chequered flag

Lewis Hamilton takes pole position for the Malaysian Grand Prix.

Max Verstappen crosses the line, third quickest...

...and the German goes second quickest, a wobble at the final corner costs him a bit of time and he crosses the line four tenths down on Lewis Hamilton, who is all set to clinch pole here.

Weather is good is the message over the team radio. Max Verstappen may have got a little ahead of himself with that report of drizzle earlier.

Meanwhile, Nico Rosberg is making steady progress...

"Any rain at Turn 4, Max?"

Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg seem to put so much pressure on each other, one of them eventually cracks.

Will Rosberg get it together for his second shot at pole?

The cars are back out on the track with two minutes to go...

Mark Gallagher

It is frustrating for us watching that we don’t get both Mercedes drivers performing at the same time. They seem to put each other under so much pressure.

Rain about to come into play?

Max Verstappen reports "light drizzle" in sector three.

Daniel Ricciardo third quickest, with Kimi Raikkonen fourth while Nico Rosberg is only fifth after his first run. A mistake at Turn 6 cost him. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton goes quickest with 1:32.850, ninth tenths of a second quicker than Rosberg.

First blood to Hamilton.

Max Verstappen goes quickest in the early stages of Q3, clocking 1:33.420.

Disappointing from Valtteri Bottas. He'll start 11th tomorrow, the lowest he has started on the grid since the season opener.

Go! Go! Go!

Off we go then. The top 10 shootout is under way.

What a fine job by Jenson Button. He put together an excellent lap.

It is a significant lap for two reasons. One, the Sepang track is a horse power track with two straights a km long. To go eighth is a genuine lap. It highlights the progress that Honda are making. Secondly, this is a track where you need a good balance. Good cars go well here, bad cars go badly. This is a good car. That we can conclude.

Not a record, still impressive

Okay, so we may have got a bit carried away there... Actual @sepangcircuit lap record is a 1:32.582 set in 2005 (sorry @alo_oficial!) #F1

Daniil Kvyat out qualifies his team-mate Carlos Sainz by 1,000th of a second. It may be a tiny, tiny margin but that will still be a boost to the Russian's confidence.

Jenson Button survives. He is in the fight for a place in the top 10 on the grid for what will be his 300th grand prix start. Superb lap.

Valtteri Bottas is the biggest casualty as a 1:34.577 isn't enough to see him through. His Williams team-mate Felipe Massa sneaks in.

Is Felipe Massa feeling safe? He is currently P7 and isn't going out for a second run. Everyone else below him is.
