Tight at the top

Less than a tenth of a second between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg but Hamilton looks in fighting mood. Will it be enough, though? He really needs the Red Bulls to get into the mix.

One thing is for sure; qualifying is going to be very interesting,

I am excited to see Williams and in particular Bottas looking competitive. At the moment it is looking good for Hamilton for the race win.

Two minutes left of second practice.ย

Sebastian Vettel has moved from standing behind a metallic silver barrier to standing behind an orange one.

Vettel's team-mate Kimi Raikkonen is sneaking in a swift run on ultra softs. He's popped back to the pits to have the purple-walled tyre bolted on.

Sebastian Vettel's Ferrari has been wheeled off the track and the four-time world champion is stood behind a barrier watching the action.

He should 'do an Alonso' and grab a deckchair or a TV camera.

Gearbox failure for Vettel

Oh dear.ย

A Ferrari has pulled up on the side of the circuit. It's Sebastian Vettel.

"OK I think I have a gearbox failure," he says.

Max Verstappen switches from ultra softs to softs as we enter the final 10 minutes of the session.

"I'm destroying my front right tyre again," complains Max Verstappen. He's just completed his 10th lap on the ultra softs.ย

Jenson Button never ended up doing another qualifying sim on the ultra softs. He's back in the pits now and preparing to join the long run runners.

Meanwhile, Kimi Raikkonen is trying the super softs out for size, meaning they've covered the whole colour range of tyres available this weekend.

@bbcf1 do you think this could be Rosberg's best & last chance to win title? If pack closes next year & Lewis surely still stronger? #bbcf1

Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg are lapping at similar times at the moment. Red Bull are yet to show their hand on their long runs with about 25 minutes to go.

Eleven laps into his long run on the ultrasofts, Valtteri Bottas reports that his tyres are struggling. His times have dropped from 1:47s to 1:50s.

Jenson Button is asked if he fancies another lap because several other cars have found time on their second runs. He's well up for that so round he goes again.

Jenson Button crosses the line to complete the qualifying runs. He does a 1:42.823 to P12, one place and five tenths of a second down on his team-mate Fernando Alonso.

Looking at the Mercedes, they were doing a 1:40.1 but now they are six seconds slower. It is is so slow and gentle because they are trying to protect the tyre to make sure they can get some distance in the race. Six seconds is a long distance from what was a qualifying run to a race run.

Just one driver left to do an ultrasoft run, Jenson Button. He's having to make up for lost time after McLaren changed the power unit earlier.

Ferrari once again are splitting their strategies for this part of practice. Sebastian Vettel is on the softs while Kimi Raikkonen is still on the ultra softs.

Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg are back out on the circuit now to crack on with their long runs.

Day done for Toro Rosso?

Tom Clarkson

BBC Radio 5 live commentator

Carlos Sainz is getting out of his car. Franz Tost, the Toro Rosso team principal, has just been looking at the left rear of Sainz's car, that's the side that Daniil Kvyat had a problem on. It looks like their running might be done for the day.

We're coming to the end of the qualifying runs so it looks like Lewis Hamilton will finish the session fastest again.

Most cars are back in the pits to prepare for long runs with 40 minutes to go.

Good lap by Lewis Hamilton as he nudges Nico Rosberg down to second by doing a 1:40.861 on the ultrasofts. Eight hundredths of a second between the two Mercedes drivers.

A 1:41.389 puts Max Verstappen third, four tenths down on Nico Rosberg.

Lewis Hamilton is out now on the ultrasofts, so we'll know soon enough if the set up changes do the business for the reigning world champion. He hasn't been happy with the balance so far in FP2.

...it's a 1:40.940 for Nico Rosberg, putting him a tenth clear of the rest at the top of the order.

Sebastian Vettel retains top spot as Valtteri Bottas and Kimi Raikkonen go second and third quickest respectively on their first ultrasoft run.

Nico Rosberg is coming round now to complete his first run on that tyre compound and he's fastest of all so far...

Tom Clarkson

BBC Radio 5 live commentator

I've just watched Nico Rosberg head out for his qualifying run but it will be a while before we see Lewis Hamilton. The front wing is off his car and he is having his front anti roll bar changed. Hamilton clearly still not happy with his car.ย
