Ewan Clark: I wonder if people think Ferrari dominating is good for F1. You can guarantee if this was the other way round people would be complaining

Sebastian Vettel is playing down Ferrari's Friday dominance.

"This is a circuit that suits them," he says. "They will be strong tomorrow."

Stewart: Mercedes are in for an absolute Honda of a race if they don't get their act together. Its nice to see them have to work!

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said earlier this week that the era of Mercedes domination was over. On the basis of this afternoon Mercedes here in Russia have a problem this weekend. Ferrari, both on long and short runs were outpacing Mercedes.

FP2 - the rest

Mercedes panicking?

Tom Clarkson

BBC Radio 5 live commentator

I think this could be a pivotal moment in the battle for the 2017 title. This was meant to be a slam dunk for Mercedes so if Ferrari come here and dominant to the extent we have seen this afternoon I think Mercedes will be panicking.

FP2 top 10

1) Vettel 2) Raikkonen 3) Bottas 4) Hamilton 5) Verstappen 6) Ricciardo 7) Massa 8) Hulkenberg 9) Magnussen 10) Perez

Chequered flag

Sebastian Vettel finishes fastest in second practice for the Russian Grand Prix.

"Incredible. The Force India just passed me. It was so far behind," observes Stoffel Vandoorne.

McLaren looking way off the pace so far in Sochi.

Both Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton are on the supersofts and once again Ferrari look to have the edge over Mercedes. Vettel's last lap was a 1:38.005 while Hamilton's was a 1:38.867.

Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel are swapping things around as Raikkonen has ultrasofts bolted onto his car with Vettel going for supersofts for the final six minutes.

Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton locks up again...

Meer Shah: Lewis Hamilton may be struggling or it just could be that he's playing the underdog role and saving his best 'til qualifying n the race

Bake problems? Grosjean? Never

"I don't have any brakes," complains Romain Grosjean for about the 1287th time today.

"OK," is the rather exasperated reply.

Lewis Hamilton is back on softs after struggling to match both his team-mate and Sebastian Vettel's times on ultrasofts. Twelve minutes to go.

Hamilton's troubled day continues?

Andrew Benson

Chief F1 writer

Valtteri Bottas and Sebastian Vettel are on average lapping at 1:38.9. Lewis Hamilton has had a terrible long run, he has been seven or eight tenths off.

Romain Grosjean reels off a list of braking issues he is having. Once again, he's not a happy chap.

Yellow flag

A Red Bull has pulled up at the side of the track. It's Max Verstappen, who says: "I lost power, I lost power."

He's right on the edge of the pitlane entry. Close but not close enough.

Spin!

A fairly dramatic-looking spin for Romain Grosjean as he 360s his Haas at the final corner. He keeps it out of the wall, rights himself and gets back on his way.

Ferrari are once again splitting their strategy. Kimi Raikkonen is deep into a race simulation on supersofts while Sebastian Vettel is on ultrasofts for his long run.

Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton are also on ultrasofts.

Sebastian Vettel can smell something. He thinks it is burning and asks his team to check whether it is coming from his car or another one.

How's the saying go? Whoever smelt it dealt it...

Practice (hopefully) makes perfect.

Mercedes, and in particular Lewis Hamilton, are putting a lot of emphasis on practice starts in... well... practice. Hamilton has just done another one.

Well he hit the target. Maybe the Death Star will blow up.

"My target, did I hit it," asks Lewis Hamilton.

"You hit the target," he is told.

After an extended period in the pits, Stoffel Vandoorne finally gets back out on the track for some much-needed lappage.

Pascal Wehrlein is once again quicker than his team-mate Marcus Ericsson. Wehrlein's best time is a 1:37.441, putting him P17 and four tenths quicker than Ericsson.

Several drivers, including the front runners, are back in the pits as focus switches to long runs with a touch over 30 minutes remaining in second practice.

We are seeing a picture here where the Ferrari car is quicker around this circuit and Mercedes are not where they want to be on a Friday afternoon. Work to be done.

Another lock up for Lewis Hamilton.

For a man who is never happy with anything less than perfection, this will be frustrating.

Pretty much everyone has done a lap on the ultrasofts now. Stoffel Vandoorne, who is in the pits, Lance Stroll and Pascal Wehrlein are the only drivers who's best time in the session remains the one they set on the softs.

The top 10 as it stands is:

1) Vettel 2) Raikkonen 3) Bottas 4) Hamilton 5) Verstappen 6) Ricciardo 7) Massa 8) Hulkenberg 9) Perez 10) Ocon

Valtteri Bottas nips ahead of Lewis Hamilton to once again slot into third place. Six tenths off Sebastian Vettel's time.

Ferrari, as Keith says below, are looking the real deal.
