@bbcchampionship this is an embarrassment to down football and a major wake up call

O'Rourke pleased with second-half display

Monaghan manager Malachy O'Rourke said: "Down were lively in the first quarter but as the first half went on we got to grips with them.

"We wanted more urgency and that's what we saw in the second half. When we got on top we exploited gaps. It's a work in progress but I'm delighted to get through.

Monaghan just walked through us in the second half. Some of it is inexcusable - just switching off and letting the score blow out.

The scoreboard tells two teams moving in totally different directions.

Malachy O’Rourke spotted that Down were winning the ball easily off their own kick-outs and made a change by moving a couple of his men up. It has made a big difference.

Oisin McConville

BBC Sport NI pundit

Down have been excellent, especially early on. Their build-up play has been good but they have eight wides in the half. If Conor McManus was in their team, just for frees alone, they would be ahead.

Only difference between the sides is that Down's kick outs are absolutely brutal. #gaa @bbcchampionship
