See you soon

And that is a wrap from the overnight team at BBC Sport towers. Fear not though for the early team are mere minutes away from arriving.

See you all tomorrow for more sport.

What's happening on day seven?

After a golden start in the velodrome on Thursday night, Sir Bradley Wiggins will look to become the first Briton to win eight Olympic medals when he goes in the men's team pursuit.

Today also sees the start of the athletics with 42-year-old Jo Pavey becoming the first Briton to compete at five consecutive Games in track and field.

At the Lagoa, Helen Glover and Heather Stanning are attempting to maintain an unbeaten record stretching back to 2009.

Meanwhile, Team GB, led by Charlotte Dujardin and her horse Valegro, are well placed to secure a medal in the dressage.

Here's an unusual event, a joint gold-medal ceremony for Simone Manuel and Penny Oleksiak. That means no silver, and two national anthems.

I don't want to cause a diplomatic incident but the US was played before Canada.

Cseh beats Phelps to first in semi!

Hungary's Laszlo Cseh wins his semi in 51.57 seconds whilst Michael Phelps takes second just 33 minutes after his gold winning performance in the 200m IM.

Cseh finishes 1st whilst Phelps goes 2nd in semi

Adrian Moorhouse

1988 Olympic 100m breaststroke champion on BBC TV

If Joseph Schooling does that tomorrow he might not just get a medal he might get the medal.

Oleksiak and Manual both take Gold in dramatic tie!

Shock, confusion and history!

After a short period of switching between who had won, both Simone Manuel and Penny Oleksiak get themselves gold medals over the much fancied Australian Cate Campbell in a remarkable race.

History has been made as Simone Manuel becomes the first black female gold medalist in the swimming pool.

And amazingly, almost most insignificantly, Canada's Penny Oleksiak is only 16 years old.

Dead heat

Men's 100m butterfly

Joseph Schooling of Singapore pops in an Asian record with a 50.83 to blast home in the second semi!

Swim that time in the final and he might win it! Chad le Clos is second.

'It was hard not to get distracted'

GB's James Guy after finishing seventh in the men's 100m butterfly semi: "Michael Phelps is the GOAT (greatest of all time) and he was beside me so it was hard not to get distracted. I think I got a bit cold in the cool room - we were waiting so long for Michael's presentation. I've had a busy week so far and then back tomorrow before an evening off, which is quite nice."

James Guy swam really well and it's great news for the medley relay.

Men's 100m butterfly

Laszlo Cseh wins it, Michael Phelps was nowhere with 20m to go but finishes second!

Konrad Czerniak was third, James Guy faded into seventh.

Men's 100m butterfly

Konrad Czerniak out very quickly in lane two, Michael Phelps is fourth at the turn...

Men's 100m butterfly

I think Michael Phelps is just about dry from his last race. Ready?

'Guy should go for it'

Rebecca Adlington

Double Olympic gold-medal winning swimmer on BBC One

This morning James Guy was the second fastest Brit ever in this event. This will be his eighth race this week, but when you see someone like Michael Phelps swimming about a million, James is only 20 so why not go for it?

Men's 100m butterfly

James Guy is bouncing in the call room, waiting for his chance. You don't get to swim next to Michael Phelps very often. Go well!

Prepare to feel old

Penny Oleksiak is first athlete born after 1 January 2000 to claim an Olympic #gold medal in an individual event. #Rio2016 #CAN #swimming

Phelps in tears

You may think that after 22 times winning Olympic Gold would become routine. Rather brilliantly, it's not. Michael Phelps is in floods of tears as the national anthem plays out.

He's racing again any minute!

Phelps' busy night

Michael Phelps is collecting his 22nd gold medal, something to stick in his sock drawer somewhere. He goes in the men's 100 fly semis in, well, a few minutes.

AHHH!!! My roomie @simone_manuel just won a gold medal! I'm shaking. So proud of you. #CHAMP

'The greatest?'

Jason Mohammad

in Rio

We must now talk about Phelps in same breath as Ali, Pele, Bradman & Lewis. One of the greatest sportsmen. Agree? #Phelps #bbcrio2016

'It baffles me'

Rebecca Adlington

Double Olympic gold-medal winning swimmer on BBC One

I'm so shocked by that race. I don't think it's sunk in. Cate Campbell broke the world record two months ago - how can you go from that to sixth? It just baffles me.

Olympic Record

Women's 100m freestyle

That is an Olympic record too, jointly held by Simone Manuel and Penny Oleksiak. 52.70 seconds.

The winners

Women's 100m freestyle

That second 50m was stunning. It could have been almost anyone into the last stroke.

Adrian Moorhouse

1988 Olympic 100m breaststroke champion on BBC TV

That's quite stunning. That's hugely emotional. It was a bit unusual to see the Campbell sisters joking in the ready room - can't you just focus?

'History at the pool'

Women's 100m freestyle

Andy Jameson

BBC commentator and former British Olympic swimmer

Unbelievable. History at the swimming pool. Our first black lady has won a gold medal in the swimming pool.

Simone Manuel

Women's 100m freestyle

It may have solved a few family arguments - neither Campbell sister has a medal!

Bronte is fourth, Cate sixth. She paid for that lightning first 50m.

Gold Medal - Simone Manuel/Penny Oleksiak

Women's 100m freestyle

Wow! A stunning last 50m! We have a real shock result here - two gold medallists!

Simone Manuel and Penny Oleksiak take joint golds!

Manuel is the first black female gold medallist in the swimming pool, and Oleksiak is just 16.

Women's 100m freestyle

Cate Campbell flying! Under world record pace at halfway.

Women's 100m freestyle

Simone Manuel started like a train in the semis. There they go!

'The occasion was unbelievale'

GB's Dan Wallace after finishing eighth in the men's 200m individual medley: "It was a pretty special experience for me. It was amazing to get to an Olympic final - but the names in that final, the occasion was unbelievable. I'll go back home to Scotland now - I've spent four years in America - but I'm ready for a change and excited for the future."

A new piece of swimming history for @MichaelPhelps, 4th gold in the 200 IM at consecutive Olympics. Exceptional! #Olympics #Rio2016

Transcending his sport

In 2008 I was at The Valley when Charlton showed Usain Bolt's 100m win at half-time. Spine-tingling stuff.
