It was always going to be tough coming here in the first game of the season in front of a passionate crowd and a good Worcester team. We didn’t look after the ball, I lost count of how many times we lost the ball in attack. We didn't underestimate them, I just don't think we got our game going. We will get better.

Friday night rugby

FT: Worcester 13-12 Northampton, Harlequins 26-12 Wasps, Newcastle 27-39 Gloucester

So what a night to start the new Premiership season.

Worcester are off and running back in the top tier with a last minute Tom Heathcote drop-goal winning the game, while Harlequins and Gloucester start the season impressively too.

Great finish at Sixways between @WorcsWarriors and @SaintsRugby Superb start to Premiership season! #bbcrugby #AvivaPrem

What a cracking finish to the game / start to the season at Sixways. Heathcote redeems himself, great stuff #bbcrugby

I'm just delighted because we worked really hard. Considering what we've been through in the last 12-18 months this is a great start. We wanted to see if we could be robust defensively and we were against one of the big power sides.

Newcastle Falcons 27-39 Gloucester

That is it at Kingston Park and it is the visitors Gloucester who get the win. They opened up a big first-half lead and Newcastle Falcons just couldn't quite catch them after the break.

Penalty (Twelvetrees)

Newcastle Falcons 27-39 Gloucester

Billy Twelvetrees is having an impressive night with the dead balls, and kicks yet another penalty to give Gloucester a bit more of a cushion.

FT: Worcester 13-12 Northampton

FT: Harlequins 26-21 Wasps

I watched the second leg of the Championship final her last year here and that was on a knife edge like tonight. Northampton are a top quality side but we stuck at it . A lot of the younger boys are making their Premiership debut and it's going against the unknown, so hopefully that'll build confidence.

Try (McGuigan)

Newcastle Falcons 27-36 Gloucester

The hosts drive with a powerful maul and eventually get the ball over the line. They are now nine points behind, with seven minutes to play. Replacement George McGuigan is credited with getting the ball down.

FT: Worcester 13-12 Northampton

We made it hard for ourselves in the end. I thought it was all over when Stephen Myler kicked that goal. I was just fortunate to get the ball back as the boys showed good composure to get in the right position and I had just enough to slot it over

What a start for Worcester who begin life back in the Premiership with a win over the team that finished top of the pile last season.

Tom Heathcote will get the headlines but it was a huge defensive effort from the whole team.

Incredible!!

A drop-goal in injury time wins the game for newly-promoted Worcester.

Tom Heathcote, who had just missed two penalities, just gets enough on his strike for it to go over the posts.

Who needs the Rugby World Cup?

Penalty (Myler)

Worcester 10-12 Northampton

Stephen Myler makes no mistake and have Saints snatched this at the death?!

Worcester have 90 seconds to try and regain the lead.

Wasps give it a real go in the dying seconds but eventually they give the ball away and Harlequins hold on to win.

Wasps will take a losing bonus point, but it is Quins who open their account with a win.

Worcester 10-9 Northampton

You can see the Saints players getting frustrated with this - for all their possession, Worcester are getting their hands on the ball and slowing them down. At the moment it is all very close in and easy to defend.

Nick Evans kicked yet another penalty for Harlequins, and that looked to have killed the game, but just seconds later, Elliot Daly scores for Wasps to give them real hope.

Ruaridh Jackson converts so we have just five points in this game, all of a sudden.

Try (Harris)

Newcastle Falcons 20-33 Gloucester

...but Newcastle seem determined to show we have spoken too soon. Almost straight from the re-start, Mike Delany makes a break and Chris Harris crosses for another Falcons try.

If the hosts had any faint hopes of a comeback, those hopes have vanished now, surely.

Billy Twelvetrees kicks his seventh successful penalty of the night for Gloucester.

Missed penalty (Heathcote)

Worcester 10-9 Northampton

One of Worcester's problems during their relegation season when they were last in the Premiership was their goal kicking and Tom Heathcote misses his third attempt from five.

Penalty (Evans)

Harlequins 23-14 Wasps

Is that the game for Harlequins?

Nick Evans kicks well again and now the lead is nine points, which could be crucial. Wasps must score at least twice.

Penalty (Delany)

The hosts are not giving this one up just yet. Mike Delany kicks and the lead, which is still pretty sizeable, is now down to 17 points.

Missed penalty (Heathcote)

Worcester 10-9 Northampton

Tom Heathcote resumes kicking duties with a penalty shot closer to the sticks.

But he seems to snap at the strike and the ball is never in danger of dissecting the posts.

It is a scrappy period of play at the moment, with lots of replacements and breaks in play. Amazingly, Wasps are still in the game.

Missed penalty (Mills)

Worcester 10-9 Northampton

So close.

Ryan Mills had the distance, but not the accuracy. It strikes the post and falls out to Northampton who clear.

Penalty

Worcester 10-9 Northampton

Northampton's Dylan Hartley, the man who missed England's World Cup for a disciplinary breach, is penalised for a high tackle.

Worcester go towards the posts, with Ryan Mills taking this long kick...

Replacement

Worcester 10-9 Northampton

Northampton captain Lee Dickson is taken off and Kahn Fotuali'i replaces him.

The Samoan scrum-half is rapid around the fringes, can he get his team going?

Try (Hammersley)

Newcastle Falcons 10-30 Gloucester

After another successful penalty kick from Billy Twelvetrees, Newcastle Falcons finally bring an end to Gloucester's run of scoring 24 points without reply, as Simon Hammersley goes over.

He squeezes he way through, directly under the posts, and Mike Delany could hardly miss that conversion, so the hosts are now 20 points behind.

Harlequins 20-14 Wasps

James Gaskell of Wasps is tackled

Wasps miss a huge opportunity to score a try, after a big spell of pressure. They just can't get over the line, after spending several minutes just a few minutes out. Eventually, they lose possession, and Harlequins celebrate that almost like a score for themselves.

Worcester 10-9 Northampton

A bizarre moment for Worcester scrum-half Jonny Arr who accidentally dropped the ball on top of the scrum before putting it in.

When he regathered it, his pack were unable to deal with the Northampton power and conceded a penalty.

Penalty (Gopperth)

Harlequins 20-14 Wasps

Wasps are certainly not out of this yet. Jimmy Gopperth kicks the penalty and a converted try would now give Wasps the lead.

Worcester 10-9 Northampton

A big change for me is Christian Day going off as that limits the height at the line-out. You can visibly see this Worcester side growing at the moment.

Missed penalty (Heathcote)

Worcester 10-9 Northampton

Worcester respond immediately to Northampton's penalty by working their way up field and earning a penalty from out wide.

Tom Heathcote catches the ball cleanly but his kick drifts just left of the posts.
