Will ends on a positive note.

A win away in Scotland. Strong finish & win in Rome, with youngsters looking good. Yeah, I will happily take that from 1st 2 games....

FT - Italy 9-40 England

Here's an odd one for you. The official man of the match was Ben Youngs.

Curious, that, to say the least. It's given by the host broadcaster and was named after about an hour - but still...

Horatio McSherry: A hiding? It's one thing running in try after try against Italy at 65 minutes; it's another thing against any of the others.

Ian Bradley: England very flattered by the score-line, the first half nowhere near good enough.

'We thought they would fatigue'

FT - Italy 9-40 England

England head coach Eddie Jones speaking to ITV: "We thought we'd get our points in the last 20. We let them in the game in the first half with ill-discipline. In the second half we got our rhythm and it was a pretty good performance.

"We tried to take some pace into the game early and thought they would fatigue in the last 20. Off our ball we were not attacking so well and gave it back easily. Off their ball we attacked well.

"It's fantastic Paul Hill and Maro Itoje got their debuts, they will have great careers for England. For us it's a matter of who starts and who finishes."

All about the power here. Legs like pistons.

'Frustrating first half'

FT - Italy 9-40 England

England captain Dylan Hartley speaking to ITV: "The first half was frustrating. Overall it's a very satisfying win. The result was key. The bench were impressive in the last 20. We weren't 100% in the first half and we have high standards.

"Breakdown-wise we were slow. We let Italy into the game. Second half we came out and took the onus to compete at the ruck harder and got some good return. We've got a good balance. I'm chuffed to bits with the young fellas."

'We showed what England can do'

Italy 9-40 England

Jonathan Joseph speaking to ITV:¬†"We showed what England can do ‚Äď we are proud of that performance. We needed to come out firing in the¬†second half. The errors from the first half were eradicated and we¬†kicked on. We‚Äôre very proud of our defence and our structure. That helped force the error for my intercept try."

James Haskell and Chris Robshaw celebrate

"Once England got to the last 20 minutes, the quality came through. However, England also did that against Fiji in the World Cup. Eddie Jones will have expected more progression than what we saw in the first half. England have a long way to go but I think Eddie is the right man to take England there."

Former England captain Will Carling likes what he saw from England's next generation.

Mustn't get too carried away, but Itoje, Clifford, George all crucial in a great Farrell try. Youngsters looking good

FT - Italy 9-40 England

Well worth a watch this. It's Jonathan Joseph's second try of his 18-minute hat-trick.

The dink through from Danny Care is lovely. The touch of a Care Bear, if you will.

FT - Italy 9-40 England

So it's a triple for Double J.

Three tries for Jonathan Joseph. Five tries in total. But have England dished out the "hiding" Eddie Jones wanted?

George Ford and Italy's Martin Castrogiovanni

Anthony Watson chases one down the left flank but nothing is giving. Penalty for Italy and the referee brings an end to proceedings.

Italy 9-40 England

A bit of comedy juggling to send everyone home happy at the end.

Martin Castrogiovanni plays a blind pass that looks like it would be a trickshot if this were snooker. England gather and want one more try.

"England are starting to look like a good team in attack. The next step will be to be able do this early on if they want to make the step up to a world class team."

Italy 9-40 England

So, Italy are crumbling like a stale panettone, but England have been reasonably ruthless in the last few minutes.

The home side's heads have dropped.

Try - Farrell, con Farrell

Slick as you like from England.

George Ford rifles it into the gut of Jamie George who offloads superbly to the on-rushing Owen Farrell to go over completely untouched.

And then he knocks over the extras.

Try - Joseph, missed con Farrell

Italy 9-33 England

Owen Farrell takes a conversion

Jonathan Joseph's hat-trick and the best of the three. Joe Launchbury does so well to pull in defenders and create space for it to be worked out to the centre.

He has plenty to do though and drives the legs to the line from five metres, taking one, two and finally three Italians with him as he touches down.

Owen Farrell's conversion is from the left touchline and it hits the far post and comes back.

Replacement

Another debut. This rime it's Paul Hill making his England bow. Off goes Dan Cole. Mike Brown is replaced by Alex Goode and Dylan Hartley by Jamie George.

Italy 9-28 England

A good period for Italy, showing they can get hands on the ball. Mattia Bellini has looked sharp on the Italian wing and he's crashing into the tackles.

Plenty of phases but no territory for the hosts and they concede the penalty.

Italy 9-28 England

England's attack has sparked into life in the second half and they are well on top in the attacking stats, despite Italy's recent flurry.

Italy go to touch and England are penalised from the line-out. Another offside.

This time the line-out is snaffled by Billy Vunipola. And England can breathe again.

Italy 9-28 England

Clever work from Luke McLean who sticks one foot out of touch while collecting the ball on the full. It gives Italy an advanced line-out.

And they work it well as Michele Campagnaro is wriggling away down the right. He's stopped just shy of the line but Maro Itoje strays offside.

Penalty - Farrell

Italy 9-28 England

The scrum brings England a penalty and from in line with the left-hand upright, Owen Farrell finds the middle of the posts.

Italy 9-25 England

Well, that looks a shade better from England's point of view. And they're playing with much more verve and confidence now.

Try - Joseph, con Farrell

Italy 9-25 England

Jonathan Joseph scores a try
Reuters

This time it's a try completely of England's making.

The visitors set the drive nicely from an attacking line-out, with Dylan Hartley in possession at the back.

Danny Care takes it and comes alive, stroking a kick through the heart of the Italian defence, like Thierry Henry stroking into the net.

It's perfect for Jonathan Joseph to touch down under the posts. His second of the match, and seventh in his England career.

Replacement

Italy 9-18 England

An England debut for Maro Itoje as he comes on for James Haskell.

He's straight into a scrum which results in an England penalty.

‚ÄúWhat a shame from Italy. They were doing everything right, they had England pushed back but it was a blind pass lobbed in the air that has let England off the hook.‚ÄĚ

Try - Joseph, con Farrell

Italy 9-18 England

Jonathan Joseph runs through to score

Absolute gimme for England.

Italy look pretty happy in their own 22, but Leonardo Sarto fluffs his pass to Luke McLean and Jonathan Joseph is on it in a flash and strolls over the line.

That makes it easy peasy for Owen Farrell to convert.

Italy 9-11 England

It's another Italian penalty, although it's a messy one and it's been given by the TMO for a binding issue. Bit unfortunate there, England.

But Italy go to touch.
