Ireland 40-29 New Zealand

To be fair the New Zealand Herald has been gracious in All Blacks defeat with one story on their website hailing "the magnificent men in green".

The two teams meet again in a fortnight's time at the Aviva. If you have tickets for that one, clutch them tight.

It is going to be an almighty encounter.

Bye for now.

Fitting tribute

Ireland 40-29 New Zealand

There is a fair bit of schadenfreude sloshing around on social media after the New Zealand newspaper the NZ Herald mocked up both Australia coach Michael Cheika and Lions coach Warren Gatland as clowns in recent weeks.

Two words that say it all...

Thank you Ireland and NZ rugby, truly epic encounter between two teams fuelled with equal desire to win. Well done Ire.. wow what a win

Ireland captain Rory Best on BT Sport: "We know New Zealand are a great side and knew we would have to go out and attack them. We put in so much work over the last couple of weeks and this win has been a long time coming, but history has been made and we're absolutely ecstatic.

"Thanks to the fans - the atmosphere here has been amazing, it's been like a home match."

Ireland 40-29 New Zealand

You have to go back to 2012 - and that famous 38-21 defeat at Twickenham - to find the All Blacks on the wrong end of a heavier scoreline.

It is just the fifth time in history that the All Blacks have conceded 40 points in a match.

Ireland 40-29 New Zealand

Plenty of those Irish players will be going to NZ next summer. So will Andy Farrell...

If Wales' defeat by Australia earlier today was a result to make you fear for the Lions, that was one to make you optimistic.

The All Blacks slipped from their stratospheric standards and Ireland had the heart, fight and skill to take advantage.

Ireland 40-29 New Zealand

A slightly less romantic take from World Rugby big wig Brett Gosper, but he had a point.

That was a Test match that had everything.

No better advertisement for rugby in the heart of the world's biggest sporting market #IrlVNZ #Chicago

What a bloody brilliant win. Historic ! Well played Ireland - my timeline will no doubt be full of apologies 😂😂😂😂😂👍🏼

Congratulations to the Irish team for their historical win over New Zealand today; an outstanding performance.

Ireland 40-29 New Zealand

After Munster's emotional win over Glasgow, that is some tribute to Anthony Foley, a national and provincial legend.

Full-time

Ireland 40-29 New Zealand

111 years of trying and Ireland have finally beaten New Zealand.

Ireland 40-29 New Zealand

The hooter blows.

New Zealand want the final say, even in defeat though and are running from deep.

Missed penalty

Ireland 40-29 New Zealand

New Zealand knock on and give away a penalty.

Joe Carbery screws his kick wide. But the clock is down to a mere minute.

This is over.

Start the party.

Converted try

Ireland 40-29 New Zealand - Robbie Henshaw, con Carbery

Absolute scenes!

Robbie Henshaw takes a short pop off  number eight Jamie Heaslip and like a battlecruiser ploughs through the remains of the All Black defence.

Surely that is enough?

Another two from Joe Carbery.

Ireland 33-29 New Zealand

What spirit!

Simon Zebo  kicks ahead and suddenly it is like the charge of the Light Brigade.

A horde of green shirts bundle Ardie Savea back over his own dead-ball line and Ireland have a scrum five metres out.

Ireland 33-29 New Zealand

New Zealand spread the ball wide. Is there space out there?

Not any more. Andrew Trimble steps up and rattles the fillings of Liam Squire with a big shoulder. The All Black flanker's pass drifts forwards.

Seven minutes to go. "Ireland, Ireland," echoing around Soldier Field.

Ireland 33-29 New Zealand

New Zealand march the rolling maul up towards the Ireland 22m line. Ominous.

TJ Perenara is barking out the orders. "Keep going, keep going."

Finally Ireland get the handbrake on and stop the black momentum.

And there is a knock-on from the Kiwis as they try and move the ball away to the backs.

Eight to go.

Ireland 33-29 New Zealand

Final ten minutes. Play on halfway with a New Zealand line-out, four points in it.

What a finale.

Who thought this would be little more than a exhibition? It has been a rollicking ride of a Test.

Sean Cronin is on for Rory Best in the Ireland front row.

Dave Sommerville: If they manage to pull this off, should Ireland maybe think about making Chicago their home ground?!

Ireland 33-29 New Zealand

Ireland backed up onto their own 22 metre line, but they are flying up out of their defensive line and force the knock-on!

A tremendous bit of work from Robbie Henshaw and Andrew Trimble.

Ireland 33-29 New Zealand

New Zealand running with relish. They have a man over as they come from deep, but Ardie Savea has over-run and cannot reel in the pass.

It is wave after wave now though. Ireland need to get some time on the ball and inside opposition territory.

Tremendous atmosphere. Any neutrals in the stands are fully engaged now.

Converted try

Ireland 33-29 New Zealand (S Barrett, con B Barrett)

A brain freeze in the Ireland defence.

Devin Toner takes his eyes off his man and cannot readjust to cover Scott Barrett's jagging line past his inside shoulder.

The debutant gallops over the line like a runaway giraffe and his brother converts.

Four points in it. Fifteen minutes to go.

Ireland 33-22 New Zealand

New Zealand surge down the left wing, Aaron Cruden nudging a kick forward as the cover comes across, and Rob Kearney knocks on as he attempts to gather.

Scrum down just outside the Ireland 22m with the All Blacks putting in.

Converted try

Ireland 30-22 New Zealand (B Smith, con Barrett)

It is close, real close. But Ben Smith has managed to get downward pressure a fraction of a second before touching down out of play.

Try awarded. And conversion kicked by Beauden Barrett.

Just eight points in it.

Try review

Ireland 30-15 New Zealand

Ben Smith crashes over in the corner. The All Blacks celebrate and if they are bluffing it is pretty convincing.

The replays look tight as Simon Zebo and Andrew Trimble came flying across to make despairing tackles.

Ireland 30-15 New Zealand

This is bubbling up superbly.

New Zealand are suddenly full of menace, runners from everywhere and pace and purpose coursing through their veins.

Andrew Trimble makes a superb last-ditch tackle to drag Ardie Savea into touch by his bootlaces.

Converted try

Ireland 30-15 New Zealand (TJ Perenara, con Barrett)

Uh-oh.

Dane Coles makes a break, and TJ Perenara with an extraordinary grab to claim his off-load to skip under the sticks.

Beuden Barrett adds two more.

Ireland's lead is 22 points - more than three converted tries.

Are we at the point with 30 minutes left that they should win this match?
