Bye for now

The Great Britain Davis Cup team head off to the official team dinner as world champions.

The Stirling University Barmy Army head off to bars of Ghent to give this historic day the send off it deserves.

We are going to head off to rescue a packed lunch that should have been demolished long ago.

But not before savouring Andy Murray's match-winning shot once more. I suggest you do too.

Andrew Castle

BBC Sport tennis commentator

They have had to go to a lot of places, win a lot of matches and put in a slot of effort. The great thing about sport is sometimes it reaps its reward.

Davis Cup 2016

Great Britain won it the hard way this year.

Their defence does not look like an easy draw either.

After playing Japan, and top-eight staple Kei Nishikori, in the first round, Great Britain could face Serbia in the quarter-finals and then Switzerland in the semi-finals.

No guarantees that the likes of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka will be involved in those potential ties. But they could be...

#GreatBritain are @DavisCup CHAMPIONEEEES!! This is History!! I'm cryingggggggg! 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧 #OMG #LEGEND #WOW #PROUD 🍾🏆@andy_murray #TeamGB

Andy Murray lifts the Davis Cup

Andy Murray has made himself a part of the best generation of tennis players of all-time and this is another feather in his cap.

GB Davis Cup team memberDom Inglot: We are all buzzing, this is a special, special night. We have all achieved this together. Andy has been a guiding force but it needed everyone."

A short interlude for some indoor fireworks - accompanied by a string soundtrack - before the Great Britain team huddle around the Davis Cup again for some photos.

Andy Murray grabs centre spot and no-one is going to deny him that.

It might get lost in highlight edits now and future - so let's point out Murray made point of consoling Belgians after he'd won #DavisCup

Britain's momentous day

Piers Newbery

BBC Sport at Flanders Expo

Dom Inglot leads the fist pumping as another techno tune blares out, and Dan Evans has a typically cheeky grin as he raises the trophy as an official world champion.

The fascination of indoor fireworks keeps most of the crowd inside the arena and away from the bar, and it proves to be the only underwhelming few minutes of a momentous day.

"See you in Birmingham," says captain Smith, but it surely cannot get better than this.

Jamie Baker

Former GB Davis Cup player on BBC One

It has been amazing. The disappointment of football and rugby with my Scottish hat on, these guys have just won the World Cup of tennis.

Captain Leon Smith's speech: I can't believe this is happening. I want to thank all the players for an unbelievable effort. A big well done to the Belgium team, they had a phenomenal year.

"I want to thank the support team, they have been rocking the whole time. We couldn't do this without you.

"A big thanks to the Belgium fans for putting on one of the best atmospheres we could ever play in front of.

"The supporters have been absolutely fantastic. It felt like a 50/50 home tie, that is how good you were."

The British fans get bigged up - Leon Smith says that they turned it into a "50:50 atmosphere" and that he will see them all in Birmingham for the first match of Great Britain's defence against Japan in March.

Smith then gets doused in water by his lurking team - the captain wisely holding the microphone out away from him to avoid being fried in his moment of triumph.

Annabel Croft

Former British number one on Radio 5 live

It feels like this is so special and I will look back on it for many years to come. I have nothing but admiration for the Great Britain team and what they have achieved.

Calum McDougall: Great Britain, world champions! That's got a very nice ring to it.

Tom Blakey: Surely that trophy exceeds the luggage allowance.

This is the captain of your ship...

And captain Leon Smith is handed the microphone to address the whole of the Flanders Expo.

He offers thanks and condolences the Belgians -  both team and fans - and the British backroom staff.

Great Britain lift the Davis Cup

The GB team lift the David Cup

An, and I am being kind here, operatic rendition of the national anthem before finally Great Britain are allowed to advance on the Davis Cup proper.

They lift the cup off the three-tiered plinth and hoist it aloft amid ticker-tape and Black Eyed Peas. They actually sound good compared to that version of God Save the Queen.

Matt McGladrigan: I could watch that final point again and again. Just sums up everything that Andy brought to the #DavisCup this year.

"GB have done it in the most spectacular style"

Miniature replicas of the massive Davis Cup are doled out to each of the Great Britain team, giving them something to stick on each of their mantelpieces and saving them popping a hernia by trying to lift the real thing.

The two teams applaud before the trophy presentation

The various official pick up some mementos of their involvement.

And now it is time for the members of the British team who were not selected to get a moment in the limelight.

Dan Evans and Dom Inglot get a rousing round of applause as they emerge from behind the scenes.

BBC tennis correspondent on Radio 5 live

This time last year we were only a few miles away from here watching Roger Federer win the Davis Cup for the first time in his career. This year, it is the white tracksuits of Great Britain coming out to receive this great trophy, which dates all the way back to the year 1900.

There were a couple of things the other top players had on Murray, the number one ranking, which I am sure will be a focus for him, and also this great trophy. Anyone who is anyone has got their hands on that.

Victory ceremony begins

The Great Britain team are announced on court as world champions by the Flanders Expo tannoy.

Andy Murray is grinning ear from ear as he strides out. His hair is soaking wet as well. I think he has had a celebratory champagne shampoo and set.

Heavyweight Murray makes history

Piers Newbery

BBC Sport at Flanders Expo

Andy Murray

The combined challenge of whistles, shouts, camera flashes and the weight of history could not derail Murray from his task, and neither could Goffin.

The two-time Grand Slam champion claimed a regulation straight-sets win in very irregular circumstances, completing a Herculean year-long effort.

Goffin gave everything and extended Murray to two hours and 54 minutes, but there was no stopping the Scot, who was mobbed by his team-mates after landing the title with a brilliant lob and falling back on the clay.

"I just can't believe we did it," said Murray. "I play some of my best tennis when I'm playing for my country."

Daryl James: Growing up a British GS winner was unrealistic, Wimbledon very unlikely, Davis Cup impossible, then Murray appeared.

Daniel Robin Slavin: Have loved watching the Davis Cup this year so proud of British tennis.

Too right Daryl. He has led a one-man revolution in the sport in this country.

We'll only realise what we have got when he has gone.

John Lloyd

Former Davis Cup finalist on BBC One

It is the most amazing achievement. We are champions of the world. Andy Murray's performance was absolutely staggering,. We have to use, this, we have to inspire people to play tennis.

Kyle Edmund

Kyle Edmund on BBC One: "Watching that today was so good. He put in a huge effort. We have just won the Davis Cup, it is an unreal thing to say.

"To think about where we were five years ago, now we have won the competition. It has taken a lot of hard work. A lot of players have played their part and they deserve the recognition.

"This is like nothing I have experience and I will use it.

He starts scratching in the year. He could have done that before now to be fair.
