Konta into the last eight

Another big scalp to add to a collection that already includes Garbine Muguruza, Simona Halep, Venus Williams and Roberta Vinci for Johanna Konta.

Many apologies for the loss of pictures from Eastbourne for some time during that third set. I hope you managed to catch the last couple of games when they returned and will join us tomorrow to see if Konta can make the semi-finals.

Bye for now.

Johanna Konta speaking to BBC Sport: "There are not words big enough to describe the support you the crowd have shown me, I really appreciate it from the bottom of my heart.

"Both of us were playing at a really good level in parts and struggling to keep that up in others and I think I just managed to string a few points together today.

"I am really happy that I was able to maintain my level as well as i could.

"Both Makarova and Petkovic are world-class players. I'm going to work on recovering now and getting ready for whoever I play."

Kvitova's energy levels have really dipped and she must be wondering how on earth she is in this predicament. But how well Konta has put the disappointment of losing that first set behind her.

And even if she doesn't this time, there are another two identical chances already loaded up in the pipeline.

There's the jugular.

Johanna Konta can land what would surely be the fatal blow here.

Never mind the wheels, the axle, gearbox and furry dice have also fallen off Petra Kvitova's wagon.

Johanna Konta is calmly picking off the carrion and, after failing to convert two break points at 15-40, gets the job done at a third attempt.

*Kvitova 7-5 4-6 0-2 Konta

Johanna Konta chalks off one of the five service holds needed to to tie up this match.

Not a lot coming in the opposite direction from Petra Kvitova - just the one point nibbled off the Briton's serve.

Konta breaks

This match has more ebbs, flows, twists and turns than the Amazon.

Petra Kvitova looks like she has run her batter flat. She offers up two break points and Johanna Konta pounces on the first.

The Devonshire Park crowd are warming up nicely in the evening sun, but you sense there are still a few shocks and surprises left in the narrative.

You fancy some match stats?

Sure. Johanna Konta is serving well, just as you have to to keep tabs on Petra Kvitova.

She has a healthy first serve percentage of 72% and has landed with five ace.

On we go...

We are heading into a third and deciding set.

Can Petra Kvitova exhume the scintillating form that carried off the first set?

Can Johanna Konta grind harder than a dancefloor pest and finish the job?

We are about to find out.

Petra Kvitova's serves seem to be cannoning into stacked baked bean cans at the back of the court.

There is a mighty metallic clatter as the ball streaks past Johanna Konta.

I'm not sure what is back there, but the sound gets replayed a fair few times as she cruises to love service hold.

Johanna Konta with the whip hand now.

Petra Kvitova's foot has slipped off the accelerator and she is sleepwalking towards a third set as she often does.

Where is the momentum in this match now?

After riding firmly with Petra Kvitova for the last 20 minutes, it has gone hiding again.

The Czech comes off the boil and has to save break point - Konta bunting a return long - to get to deuce.

*Kvitova 7-5 1-1 Konta

Johanna Konta's pre-serve routine is not quite at the Rafael Nadal levels of obsessive quirkiness.

But her exaggerated ball bounce and racquet twizzle are a sight.

Whatever works though and the Briton stops a run of six successive games for Kvitova as she holds from 30-30.

Kvitova 7-5 1-0 *Konta

An arm-wrestle of a game to open up the second set.

Neither player is taking a backward step, sticking stubbornly to the baseline in the face of some fierce groundstroke fire.

But Petra Kvitova's serve, full of pep and zip sees her right from deuce.

Kvitova didn't looked fazed in that set but perhaps Konta started fretting a little bit internally. Konta told her trainer she felt she wasn't creating many windows for herself and felt that Kvitova was either hitting or missing. She was getting a bit down on herself.

Kvitova 6-5 *Konta

Petra Kvitova is chugging through this first set like the Flying Scotsman at full bore.

Four games in a row and now Johanna Konta needs to stop the rot and hold serve to stay in the set.

"Accept the challenge, don't resist it," says her coach Esteban Carril.

Anne Keothavong

Petra Kvitova is very laid-back, very easy to talk to and that's why she's so popular with the other players. I saw her playing as a 16-year-old in an event in the Czech Republic and she was so raw. But you could tell she would go on to big things because of her huge serve.

Kvitova breaks back

*Kvitova 5-5 Konta

Johanna Konta saved one of the break points with an ace that cleaved clean through the middle of the T.

But it is too much of a chasm to bridge.

Kvitova is flat-level on the scoreboard.

Petra Kvitova is turning the tide in this match.

She clambers into a forehand return - clattering away a clean-as-a-whistle that Johanna Konta can only watch blur by.

0-40 and three break points.

Every game has been tight with both players having opportunities. Kvitova has had opportunities in every Konta service game but only converted one. There are more errors coming off the Kvitova racquet than Konta's.

Kvitova 4-5 Konta*

Petra Kvitova keeps her cards on the table in the set with a solid service hold from 15-30 down.

There are just three points in it overall - Kvitova winning 29 to Konta's 32.

These two are well-matched.

Kvitova breaks back

*Kvitova 3-5 Konta

Petra Kvitova pulls a consecutive set of goodies out of her pick-and-mix selection bag of shots.

That is one of the breaks back. But she has to hold her serve and break once more to make it back to parity.

Konta breaks

Kvitova 2-5 *Konta

Petra Kvitova is committing first-set hari-kari.

A waft of a forehand lands six inches wide and long, with Konta not even in the frame to leave her 15-40 adrift.

A double fault hands Jo Konta the double break.

The British number one will serve for the opening set next.

Johanna Konta is meticulous in how she prepares and goes about things. She's very disciplined. I've practised for hours with her and what's happened to her recently has been remarkable.

She used to fret a lot if things weren't perfect and it used to get to her. She is naturally highly strung but you can't always be perfect. She's better at managing that now and going with the flow.

Konta holds

*Kvitova 2-4 Konta

A big hold from a player who has shown big-time mentality over the past 12 months.

Konta's serve snaps into shape and she sees off the danger for a clear scoreboard lead.
