Great Britain have a mountain to climb if they are to keep hold of the Davis Cup.

It is likely to require Kyle Edmund to beat Juan Martin del Potro.

We will be back tomorrow for the doubles match that gets under way at 14:00 BST.

Kyle Edmund the youngest player on either side, and unravelled there. Hard to see GB coming back from 0-2, Argentina impressive, united team

Argentina 2-0 up

*Edmund 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 3-6 2-6 Pella

Guido Pella speaking on court: "I am very happy. This is a team and I am happy to give the team a second point after Juan Martin's amazing match. I was fighting every point no matter what, and at the end of the third set I was playing really well. I think that was key."

Game, set and match

Edmund 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 3-6 2-6 Pella

Great Britain have been out-scrapped today in the closing stages of each rubber.

Guido Pella tightened up his game, refused to allow Edmund any cheap points and profited when the Briton came off the boil.

Kyle Edmund

Pella breaks

Edmund 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 3-6 2-5 *Pella

Kyle Edmund is raging hard against the dying of the light, but his forehand is slowly disintegrating.

A bosh long off that wing brings up 30-30.

That is a 47th unforced error.

Pella forces deuce and then a break point as he comes out on top in a game of cat and mouse at the net.

Edmund bunts a backhand long and that is the double break.

The disc jockey misreads the majority mood and lobs on a bit of the Outcasts' Hey Ya.

Guido Pella

*Edmund 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 3-6 2-4 Pella

Kyle Edmund with a glimmer at 30-30.

But Guido Pella thumps down a T-splitter of a service, slashing away a winner off Edmund's pattercoake return.

A kicker out wide from the Argentine and that is the visitors another game closer to home.

Edmund 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 3-6 2-3 *Pella

Kyle Edmund batters though a service game to love.

Great Britain captain Leon Smith is immediately cosying up to him on the courtside bench offering up some pearls for the forthcoming return game.

Guido Pella only needs two three more successful successive service games to wrap up this rubber.

*Edmund 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 3-6 1-3 Pella

Guido Pella's touch at the net is silken.

The Argentine kills a stretching drop-volley stone dead for 40-0 and is waved on through to the game as Kyle Edmund frames a forehand towards the roof.

It is difficult to see how Kyle Edmund is going to recover this break.

Edmund holds

Edmund 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 3-6 1-2 *Pella

Kyle Edmund is on the ropes, swaying like a sailor in the rigging, but he had dodged the knockout blow.

He holds serve and keeps his cards on the table in the decider.

A break there would have been very nearly curtains.

Kyle Edmund

Edmund saves two more break points, deuce

*Edmund 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 3-6 0-2 Pella

Kyle Edmund has saved another two break points.

He is playing the big ones well so far. He has successfully defended 12 of the 17 break points that he has faced across the whole match.

Edmund saves three break points, deuce

*Edmund 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 3-6 0-2 Pella

Guido Pella is coming on strong.

A double-fisted punch down the line helps him to 0-30, before a ripper across court off the same wing brings up three break points.

Andy Murray has a 1000-yard stare on the sideline.

Kyle Edmund is blowing on the embers. He comes to the net to punch away a backhand volley for 30-40 and then picks off an advancing Pella to take it back to deuce.

Andy Murray

*Edmund 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 3-6 0-2 Pella

It is difficult to work out exactly how the momentum has changed.

Guido Pella is suddenly finding angles that he just wasn't hitting in the first set and a half.

He races into a 40-0 lead and some supreme chasing out wide forces Kyle Edmund into a front-court half-volley pick-up that he has not got the touch to make.

Pella breaks

Edmund 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 3-6 0-1 *Pella

Guido Pella sets up two break points with a fluttering butterfly of a drop shot that settles out of Kyle Edmund's reach for 15-40.

A lovely drop-volley seals the deal.

Kyle Edmund, who slid to defeat from two sets up on David Goffin in the Davis Cup final last year, is going to have to try and jumpstart something into life to turn the tide.

Guido Pella

*Edmund 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 3-6 0-0 Pella

Matt Henry has headed for the hills for the evening. Mike Henson back at the control as we head into the wilds of the fourth set.

Guido Pella with the momentum, Kyle Edmund with the majority of the home support,

Great Britain's Davis Cup defence on a knife-edge.

Here we go.

Game and third set

Edmund 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 3-6 Pella

There are some worried faces in the British crowd.

Pella looks so solid and there are more and more errors coming from the Edmund racquet.

The Briton won both his matches in the quarter-final against Serbia though don't forget. Keep the faith ladies and gents.

Guido Pella

Pella breaks

Edmund 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 3-5 Pella*

Andy Murray has finished his post-match duties and is back courtside to support his 21-year-old teammate.

He hasn't brought much luck with him though as Pella breaks serve after the 38th unforced error from Edmund.

He led 3-2 with a break in this set but now Pella has won three games in a row and will serve for it.

Looking at his body language and demeanour, it looks like Guido Pella is growing into this match. Kyle Edmund, by contrast, started well, but may be tightening up a bit.

Kyle Edmund

*Edmund 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 3-4 Pella

Without meaning to repeat ourselves, that Edmund forehand really is an impressive shot.

Two more winners in this game take us to deuce but Pella hits back with one of his own at the perfect time.

A long pause as the players are distracted by a hum in the arena, "it's the air conditioning,' says the umpire.

Pella deals with it and he's ahead again.

Edmund 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 3-3 *Pella

Jamie Baker

Former GB Davis Cup player on the BBC Red Button

"My one concern with how this is shaping up for Kyle Edmund is that the greater number of balls that Guido Pella is getting back is luring Edmund into trying tt hit harder and then his error rate creeps up.

"He needs to find different ways to win points."

Guido Pella

Pella breaks back

Edmund 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 3-3 Pella*

What is the saying?

A break is not a break until you back it up the next game?

A couple of errors from Edmund and it is 0-40.

No, Kyle. His second double fault. The Argentinian breaks straight back.

Edmund breaks

*Edmund 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 3-2 Pella

Another forehand winner from the Briton wins the first point of the game.

He looks interested, the crowd focus in as well.

A backhand error by Pella sets up three break points for Edmund.

The first saved, but not the second!

Edmund strikes first in this third set.

Kyle Edmund

Edmund 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 2-2 Pella*

Pressure again on the man from Yorkshire after a loose forehand sails into the tramlines taking us to 30-30.

Pressure? What pressure?

Edmund pummels another forehand drive volley past his opponent and then shows great speed to get up to the net and and steer the passing shot winner.

Pella straight back in front.

Chants of "Guido, Guido" from the Argentinean contingent in Glasgow.

After a few early nerves, their man is looking steady in this match.

Edmund 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 1-1 Pella*

Tidy game from Edmund.

He holds to love to even things up.

Another crunching forehand, Edmund's 23nd winner of the match, the shot of note in that game.

Pella taken to deuce but holds

*Edmund 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 0-1 Pella

'Come on Kedders,' Leon Smith shouts from the sidelines.

The Briton battles to 30-30 before a tidy volley from Pella sets up game point.

Huge forehand from Edmund though on the next point takes us to deuce.

Not to be for him in this game though. The leftie serve out wide wins the game.

Leon Smith

Edmund 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 0-0 Pella*

Right then, this is getting serious for Great Britain.

Mike Henson has popped for a well earned rest, Matt Henry here to take you through the next stage of this match.

Kyle Edmund your country needs you...

Edmund 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 Pella

Jamie Baker

Former GB Davis Cup player on the BBC Red Button

Edmund's unforced errors came right at the end and that was what decided it.

What a boost for the Argentinians, that was a must win set for them.

Game and second set

Edmund 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 Pella

Groans around the Emirates Arena.

Pella smashes and grabs the break of serve to sweep away the second set and put the match back in the balance.

This day's play is gong long. Real long.

Guido Pella

*Edmund 7-6 (7-5) 4-5 Pella

Guido Pella is a sweatier man than Kyle Edmund.

The Briton just glows while Pella employs a full towel-down routine.

Pella is being made to do more chasing, but styles make fights and so far this one is difficult to split.

Guido Pella

Edmund 7-6 (7-5) 4-4 Pella*

Jamie Baker

Former GB Davis Cup player on the BBC Red Button

Edmund doesn't show much emotion but he is rightly getting pumped up there that was a big hold from break point.

Edmund saves break point, holds

Edmund 7-6 (7-5) 4-4 *Pella

Kyle Edmund is coming in behind his forehand barrage to finish points early with put-away volleys rather than just rely on himself to hit the smaller targets from the back of the court.

Guido Pella hits a staggering down the line winner to bring up a break point.

Edmund responds with a sweet-as-a-nut inside out winner to take it to deuce.

A big ace, a zippy forehand and the danger is snuffed out.

Kris Jefferson: In the next couple of years Edmund's forehand will become the best in the world, absolutely brutal!!

*Edmund 7-6 (7-5) 3-4 Pella

This set feels like it is going the same way as the first.

Guido Pella locks down his serve to keep us chugging away on level pegs.

Guido Pella

Edmund 7-6 (7-5) 3-3 *Pella

Kyle Edmund drags Guido Pella from pillar to post on the baseline with his booming forehand setting the shuttle run pace.

*Edmund 7-6 (7-5) 2-3 Pella

This afternoon's action has been going on for so long that the Emirates Arena disc jockey has come full circle I think.

Dire Straits' Walk of Life is given another airing as Jamie Murray has some advice for Edmund on his return position. Captain Leon Smith delivers the message from courtside.

Edmund 7-6 (7-5) 2-2 *Pella

Kyle Edmund's serve is peppering the target. with consistency and quality.

The Briton is landing with a decent 66% of his first serves and winning 74% of points behind it.

Solid numbers.

Kyle Edmund

*Edmund 7-6 (7-5) 1-2 Pella

Kyle Edmund's siege-gun of a forehand is setting the tempo of this match.

It brings up break point at 30-40.

But Guido Pella jams in a good couple of serves to prevent Edmund loading up off that wing again.

Edmund 7-6 (7-5) 1-1 *Pella

Kyle Edmund slings a massive forehand down line to move 40-15 up after making a good stretch volley on the previous point.

The 21-year-old is moving well. And hitting even better.

Andy Murray speaking after his defeat to Juan Martin del Potro: "I think it was good match. I felt there wasn't too many mistakes on important moments.

"Both of us came up with good stuff and the shot he came up with to break in the fifth set was the difference."

Asked how it was playing on the day of his grandfather's funeral: "I planned on playing but it was hard, I have never experienced anything like that before.

And on returning to play doubles on Saturday: "I have never played a match of that length. I will have to see how I feel when I wake up in the morning but it will be tough that is for sure."

*Edmund 7-6 (7-5) 0-1 Pella

No obvious after-effects from that tie-break disappointment as Pella holds to love.
