Wonder if Novak Djokovic caught any of Rafa's win? And I wonder if the speed of the victories for both the Spaniard, and his compatriot Garbine Muguruza in the match before, affected the Serb's preparations?

The world number two is next up on Court Philippe Chatrier - weather permitting. Djoko is about to start against diminutive Argentine Diego Schwartzman.

However, it is time for me to hit the BBC canteen, so head over to Sportsday for the latest news.

Au revoir!

Rafa beats the rain

Piers Newbery

BBC Sport at Roland Garros

Nadal gets it done just as an ominous black cloud rolls overhead and deposits the first few raindrops of the day. It's still holding off for now but a storm has felt inevitable all week. And bad news for Murray/Del Potro fans - the Saturday afternoon forecast is a shocker.

James Stevenson: What does Nadal think this is, football? #90minutes

Nadal 6-0 6-1 6-0 Basilashvil

"Happy birthday to.. me!"

That wonderful win is not a bad present for Nadal, who turns 31 tomorrow, to give himself.

And the Real Madrid supporter is hoping his favourite football team can make it an even better day by winning the Champions League final tomorrow night.

"Tomorrow is a special day, because it is my birthday, that's not the good news! The only good news is that I will have my birthday at Roland Garros for one more year - that is always special.

"And tomorrow night I will be in front of the TV supporting my team. I hope Real Madrid win another time but it will tough."

Nadal 6-0 6-1 6-0 Basilashvil

As we told you right at the top of the show, Rafa Nadal was playing his 100th best-of-five match on clay today. That's now 98 wins...

Nadal 6-0 6-1 6-0 Basilashvil

One of the greatest tennis players of all-time, eloquent in three languages, always charming, and devilishly good-looking.

If he wasn't such a nice bloke, Rafa Nadal would make you sick...

Nadal 6-0 6-1 6-0 Basilashvil

Rafa Nadal after his easy third-round win: "It is always important to be through, that's the most important thing, but obviously when you have positive feelings it is even more important.

"Basilashvili had been playing well, he won against Gilles Simon in the first round who is tough opponent and also Viktor Troicki.

"I'm happy because I had never played against him and I knew it would be tough.

"He hits the ball so quick but I believe I played my best match in a while."

Leon Smith

Great Britain Davis Cup captain on Radio 5 live sports extra

That was utterly brilliant, clinical and relentless from Nadal. He is moving great, he's confident, his forehand is so aggressive and he's hitting winners on his backhand.

He is in great form and it will take one heck of a performance from someone else to beat this guy.

Nadal 6-0 6-1 6-0 Basilashvil

Shoelaces tied (twice) and now it is time for Rafa's on-court interview. Once we've translated it from French...

Nadal 6-0 6-1 6-0 Basilashvil

Dropping only one game against the Georgian world number 63 is a new best for Rafa at Roland Garros.

Not how Basilashvili was hoping to go into the record books today...

Game, set and match - Nadal

Shots. Fired.

Rafa Nadal shows the rest why he is the 'King of Clay'.

A blistering win is wrapped up by Nadal - at the second attempt after planting is first match point into the net - in just 90 minutes.

Ruthless.

*Nadal 6-0 6-1 5-0 Basilashvili

Rafa serves for the match. Only after we see a quick flash of lightning and hear a loud rumble of thunder...

Nadal breaks...again

*Nadal 6-0 6-1 5-0 Basilashvili

Even the weather won't hold Rafa up. Two more break points for the Spanish fourth seed look to be wrapping up this game quick sharp.

Hang on... Basilashvili battles back from 15-40. Deuce sees the Georgian beaten by more Rafa brilliance, a quick flick of that left wrist, low and angled, leaves Basilasvili only able to scramble forward and hit the net.

Rafa miscalculates a forehand in the next point, before going on to rack up a third break point.

This time he gets it. Basilashvili loses his head with a weak backhand into the net.

Leon Smith

Great Britain Davis Cup captain on Radio 5 live sports extra

It is infuriating for Nadal because he wants to wrap this match up quickly and there's the possibility that the rain might delay his progress.

That seemed to distract him and his concentration dropped enough to let Basilashvili in.

So close, yet so far...

Nadal's sprightly jog to his bag, contrasted with a hunched-shouldered Basilashvili trudging across the baseline, tells you how deuce panned out.

Rafa targets the Georgian's backhand, it pays dividends, and the fourth seed wraps up the hold after winning five points on the spin.

*Nadal 6-0 6-1 3-0 Basilashvili

Wooaah! Where's this come from? Nikoloz Basilashvili has mustered three break points from somewhere.

Rafa wipes out the second with a sublime backhand which bends around the net post and back into play. The third goes with a trademark top-spinning forehand.

Deuce...

Nadal goes double break up

*Nadal 6-0 6-1 3-0 Basilashvili

Basilasvili's mood has been dark for the past hour and a bit, and now the clouds above Roland Garros are following suit. A few brollies are going up. Hopefully it will just pass over.

Hurry up Rafa! That he does with another simple hold.

If the Georgian doesn't win another game - very possible - then it will be Rafa's biggest win at Roland Garros.

Nadal 6-0 6-1 2-0 Basilashvili*

Another game, another routine Rafa hold. Not much else to say really.

Rafa's first serve percentage is relatively low at 57%, but it hasn't hampered him. He has a win percentage of 88% on second serve.

Naveed Afzal: Rafa on FIRE!!!! This is the Rafa I know and love. He's playing at a ridiculously high level today

*Nadal 6-0 6-1 1-0 Basilashvili

Nadal sees another break point - his eight of the match - disappear when Basilashvili spoils the party with a drop-shot.

The Georgian drops to haunches, probably in shock that he managed to bamboozle his illustrious opponent.

Nadal lets another slip through his fingers, but Basilashvili can't take advantage to nudge himself ahead.

Third break point for Rafa...this time he gets it. A baseline rally ends when Basilashvili loses control with a forehand which lands nearer the linejudge's feet than the baseline.

Nadal 6-0 6-1 0-0 Basilashvili*

Thankfully Basilashvili getting on the board has ended some triple bagel talk from you lot. It was making me hungry. Hopefully the Georgian will win a few more games and stop my stomach rumbling...

Goffin injured by 'dangerous' court covers

Some rather ugly still-shots of David Goffin's earlier accident are doing the rounds, showing the Belgian's ankle to have rolled right over when it got caught underneath the covers stored at the back of the court. His opponent, Horacio Zeballos, had this to say: "It's very dangerous. The thing with this court is that it's very big. It's huge. It's six meters from the baseline to the end. But still, of course, it's a little danger."

Leon Smith

Great Britain Davis Cup captain on Radio 5 live sports extra

Nadal is playing as well as he has ever played and is sending out a message to everyone else. He is playing a good player in Basilashvili, who is a good tour player and has beaten good players to get here.

That makes this performance even more impressive.

Game and second set - Nadal

Easy peasy. Rafa Nadal probably exerted more energy in his practice session this morning.

We've only been playing for 52 minutes and Rafa is already one set away from the last 16.

An ace puts him on the way as he serves for the second set, more mistakes from Basilashvili's forehand does the rest.

Leon Smith

Great Britain Davis Cup captain on Radio 5 live sports extra

There was absolutely no reaction from Basilashvili to his box or the crowd after he won that game.

*Nadal 6-0 5-1 Basilashvili

He's on the board!

Arguably the biggest cheer of the match greets Basilashvili's first game on the board.

A forehand winner - only his third of the afternoon - kicks him off nicely, going on to set up three game points.

The world number 63 takes the second and slightly puffs out his cheeks.

Nadal 6-0 5-0 Basilashvili*

Exactly what Leon Smith says below.

Rafa is showing no mercy here, even though the Chatrier crowd - not always known for their forgiving nature - appear to be feeling sorry for the Georgian.

There's almost a hushed silence every time Rafa's side of the scoreboard ticks into action.

The Spanish fourth seed racks up another hold to love in about the time it takes to fill up a 500ml bottle of water.

Leon Smith

Great Britain Davis Cup captain on Radio 5 live sports extra

Nadal is not going to feel sorry for Basilashvili. He's going to go after every single point to win this match as quickly as he can.

*Nadal 6-0 4-0 Basilashvili

Another roar from the French fans, another show of support for the glum Georgian. That's because he has a first game point of the match.

First serve... well wide of the centre linme. Second serve... returned with interest by Nadal, a backhand comes back over from Basilashvili, but that is despatached with a hammer like forehand.

Suddenly that game point becomes break point... and Basilashvili meekly taps a backhand into the net.

Nadal 6-0 3-0 Basilashvili*

Nikoloz Basilashvili reacts

Oooh la la!! Rafa wows the Chatrier crowd with a stretching forehand that he somehow turns into a winner down the line. How did he manage that? Dunno.

Basilashvili sheepishly wanders back to his bag at 40-15, perhaps he is hoping to be substituted...

A change of racket is what he needs - and it works! The Georgian finally cracks his first winner with a thumping forehand and it brings huge cheers - sincere cheers, not patronising ones - from the fans.

However, normal service is resumed in the next point...

Leon Smith

Great Britain Davis Cup captain on Radio 5 live sports extra

Basilashvili looks dejected, but he has to fight and fight and fight. He is in good form to get this far but if he keeps doing what he's doing it's going to continue like this.

He has to try to find a way to break things up and change his game.

*Nadal 6-0 2-0 Basilashvili

Rafa once won a match at Roland Garros having dropped just two games. That might be beaten today...

*Nadal 6-0 2-0 Basilashvili

Basilashvili looks like a bloke who has just found out he has been sacked from his job. Glum.

There is no hiding place for the Georgian.

Rafa relentlessly pins him back to the baseline, cracking glorious winners from both flanks and forcing mistakes.

Basilashvili has still not found a winner...

Leon Smith

Great Britain Davis Cup captain on Radio 5 live sports extra

It's relentless. You don't get a breather because Nadal's standards are so high.

Nadal 6-0 1-0 Basilashvili*

Another game, another one chalked up by Rafa.

Basiliashvili's head must feel like it has been on a 40C wash for half an hour.

Rafa whizzes through another hold to love in a matter of seconds.

Leon Smith

Great Britain Davis Cup captain on Radio 5 live sports extra

If Murray, Djokovic or Wawrinka are going to beat Nadal then they will have to play a very good match because Rafa is not going to play a bad match.

It is possible to beat him, they can play well enough and have the strategy, but they are going to have to play at peak level.

Nadal 6-0 Basilashvili

On this form the rest of them might as pack up too.

Of course, nothing is guaranteed in sport but - on this evidence - Rafa has got to be odds-on to reach the final.

His footwork is impeccable, his shot execution superb.

The rest: beware.

Game and first set - Nadal

Nadal 6-0 Basilashvili

Wow. Wow. Wow. Vintage Rafa.

Nadal breaks the Georgian's serve again to wrap up the first set in just 23 minutes.

Two trademark whipped forehands whizz past the stretching Basilashvili and that is that.

Basilashvili must wish he stayed in bed this morning.

Jonathan Overend

BBC Radio 5 live sports extra commentator

Nadal's movement is astonishing, we shouldn't be surprised, but his footwork is so fast.

Nadal 5-0 Basilashvili*

Although Nadal is cruising, he is still sweating like a marathon runner in 30C heat. The drips from the Spaniard's forehand are almost creating a pool on the baseline. The clay looks like Cleethorpes beach when the tide goes out. Almost.

It is not the tennis which is making Rafa sweat. Although a couple of loose forehands give Basilashvili a bit of hope at 30-30, normal service resumes as he finishes with a blistering forehand winner.
