'It was tense'

Murray 6-2 4-6 6-1 7-5 Fognini

Andy Murray, speaking to the BBC, says: "At the end of the match it was tense, I maybe saved four set points (it was actually five) then there was a tight game to break him at 5-5, then I served it out really well to finish.

"It was a very up and down match, I did not feel it was my best tennis at times, but I managed to get through.

"It is difficult when you play a guy who has all of the shots like him, he was was taking me out of my rhythm. It was getting dark at the end and we would have had to come off for the roof had I lost that fourth set, so I was pleased to get off.

"My body felt OK. I didn't feel I moved as well as I did in my first couple of matches. But I have got a couple of days break where I can work on that. Hopefully I can get myself into a good rhythm and come out on Monday and play good tennis. I am happy to get through the first week and anything can happen."

Play suspended

Tsonga 2-6 6-3 6-7 (5-7) 6-1 5-6 Querrey

Over on Court Two in another tense five-setter, play has been suspended for the day with Sam Querrey leading Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-5 in the fifth set on serve. They have to play to a finish on Saturday.

'Andy is an unbelievable competitor'

Murray 6-2 4-6 6-1 7-5 Fognini

Tim Henman

Former British number one on BBC Two

It was a tough battle and Andy wasn't playing his best because he wasn't allowed to. Fognini is such a talented player, he was changing his pace and using the slice from the back of the court.

There was some great tennis and for Andy to play Monday, Wednesday and Friday it is ideal he now has two days off to recover because he's done a lot of running.

He's an unbelievable competitor. He'll need to play better next week but he didn't come in to the tournament in great form but he's still in the tournament.

Paire next for Murray

Murray 6-2 4-6 6-1 7-5 Fognini

Up next for Andy Murray in the last 16 on Monday is unseeded Frenchman Benoit Paire, who beat Poland's Jerzy Janowicz 6-2 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 earlier today.

Daniel Woods‏: That's what makes Murray such a great champion. Even at 2-5 down he still believed he could win in four sets.

Drew Kendall: A true champion response there from Murray. Absolutely incredible! Had me gripped all the way!

After that incredible match, in my opinion, it is such a shame to see Fognini walk off without Murray.

Game, set and match - Murray

Murray's winning moment...

What an evening of tennis we have been treated to.

And Andy Murray is into the last 16. He had to save five set points, over three different games, in the fourth set to finally finish off the challenge of unpredictable but talented Italian challenger Fabio Fognini.

Murray moves on.

This is the mark of a great champion to stick with it, there could have been a lot of times he could have checked out. All four of those games he could have lost, yet he has figured out a way to win them all and serve for the match.

Murray breaks

*Murray 6-2 4-6 6-1 6-5 Fognini

He does it and now Murray will be serving for the match. Incredible. He has won four tough games on the spin, and is showing why he is the reigning champion.

Are there any more twists to come? I wouldn't bet against it.

Break point gone, with Fognini finding the side line with amazing accuracy.

But as soon as one break point goes, another comes for Murray.

I am sure her appearance will have given Andy a little boost.

Fognini just can't put this set to bed. Two set points in game eight, two set points in game nine and one set point in game 10, all gone.

Murray was 5-2 down in this set, somehow, unbelievably and with great drama, he has hauled it back to 5-5.

Wonderful entertainment on a Friday evening.

Lovely stuff. A 26-shot rally goes Fognini's way 0-15 on the Murray serve, before the Brit sends one into the net. 0-30.

Murray has had to battle like crazy in the last two games. He needs to go to the well once more again.

Murray breaks back

*Murray 6-2 4-6 6-1 4-5 Fognini

Incredible drama. What a game. Andy Murray saved two set points in game eight and then saved another two set points in game nine.

He then shows incredible character, the character and spirit you would expect of a world number one, to force a break of his own. We are back on serve, somehow.

Fognini tries to challenge, stops playing but then realises he has already used up his challenges. It would have been unsuccessful anyway, but what a way to save a set point, that's four and counting now from Murray.
