Until next time...

So Venus Williams will face compatriot Sloane Stephens in the semi-final, meaning at least one American is guaranteed a place in Saturday's final.

But with Madison Keys and Coco Vandeweghe also through to the last eight, there is the prospect of an all-American semi-final line-up.

There's another men's quarter-final to come tonight, as Sam Querrey faces Kevin Anderson, but it's bed time for us.

We'll be back tomorrow from 17:00 BST for Vandeweghe against Karolina Pliskova, before the small matter of Roger Federer and Juan Martin del Potro.

We'll catch you then.

Enjoy the battle - Williams

Williams 6-3 3-6 7-6 (7-2) Kvitova

More from Venus Williams, who is the second of potentially four American women into the semi-finals: "I would love the top four, five to be that (American) again. That would be huge.

"When situations get hairy and it's crazy out here, I try to tell myself to enjoy the competition and enjoy the battle."

'I hope we have more matches like that'

Williams 6-3 3-6 6-6 (7-2) Kvitova

That was really something.

Petra Kvitova waves goodbye to the crowd and heads down the tunnel towards the locker room.

Venus Williams takes to the mic: "I have to say I felt every single one of you guys behind me, all 23,000. I didn't want to let you guys down.

"Everything she has gone through is unbelievable. It's wonderful to see her back and playing. I was so excited to see her playing well, to be able to play her. I hope we have more matches like that."

Kvitova played a great match but Williams was just too good in that tie-breaker

Game, set and match

Williams 6-3 3-6 7-6 (7-2) Kvitova

That's it. Petra Kvitova's return drops wide and it's Venus Williams who makes the semi-final.

What a match. Venus sits back in her chair and smiles, she deserves it.

Tie-break

Williams 6-3 3-6 6-6 (6-1) Kvitova

Deep breath, but a whole lot of net for Kvitova on her first serve... and on the second.

Match point Williams. Five of them.

Tie-break

Williams 6-3 3-6 6-6 (5-1) Kvitova*

Forehand long - oh so long - from Petra Kvitova. It's slipping away from the Czech.

Tie-break

*Williams 6-3 3-6 6-6 (4-1) Kvitova

Kvitova needs something on Williams' serve. The first is wide, the second pushes the Czech wide and Williams wins the rally.

Tie-break

*Williams 6-3 3-6 6-6 (3-1) Kvitova

Superb down the line forehand from Venus curves in - Kvitova can't get that back.

Tie-break

Williams 6-3 3-6 6-6 (2-1) Kvitova

Another big serve from Kvitova and an even bigger passing backhand... but that's long, what a return from Williams.

Tie-break

Williams 6-3 3-6 6-6 (1-1) Kvitova*

Williams nets the return. 1-1.

Tie-break

*Williams 6-3 3-6 6-6 (1-0) Kvitova

It's Venus first up. She steadies herself and then cracks a quicken into the net.

Take two. That reaches its destination but can't beat Kvitovam but the Czech goes long.

Jeff Tarango

After all this time, all this effort, we're going into a tie-breaker. This is where you have to put away the pain, put away the doubt and just swing.

I think Venus likes the quick pace between points.

Petra Kvitova, serving to stay in the match for a second time.

Williams musters a response to the big Czech serve and engages Kvitova in a rally that the American comes out on top in. But the veteran can only guide her next return beyond the baseline.

It's breathtaking stuff as Kvitova continually clings on, before Venus finds the net. 30-15.

Fault. Let. Second serve. Pressure on for Venus.

She tosses one skywards, then changes her mind. Kvitova fires a punishing return back when the serve finally arrives, but it's long.

Williams holds.

This is high quality tennis, there hasn't been an error in three and a half games.

*Williams 6-3 3-6 5-5 Kvitova

Amid all the fantastic strokes and perfectly-placed returns, it's a net ball that hands Venus the chance to take control of her service game.

She doesn't need a second invitation to slam a forehand deep beyond the grasp of Kvitova.

But the American overcooks a similar attempt moments later, dragging a backhand wide.

An incredible day of tennis already just keeps getting better.

Kvitova holds. Superb stuff from both players. A powerful service display from the Czech.

Williams is just guiding the ball back into Kvitova's half of the court now, waiting for the Czech to make a mistake.

So what does she do? Softens the hands, adjusts the grip and guides the cutest of drop shots just over the net to go 40-0 up.

All previous meetings between these two have gone the distance. This one is no different.

Petra Kvitova is serving to stay in the match, to stay in the tournament.

The first is big, punchy and Williams won't return that. The second the American sends long.

Williams holds

Williams 6-3 3-6 5-4 Kvitova*

Williams holds. The most punishing game of the match so far, but it's the American who comes out on top.

And breathe.

*Williams 6-3 3-6 4-4 Kvitova

The brilliant to the bizarre. Williams has Kvitova scuttling from one side of Arthur Ashe to the other, but faced with a simple volley to close the game out, she gets more frame than a Mother's Day morning and finds the net.

Jeff Tarango

Former professional tennis player on 5 live sports extra at Flushing Meadows

Both players sucking wind a little bit, like a sprinter after a 200m.

*Williams 6-3 3-6 4-4 Kvitova

There it is, the ace she so needed. Williams shrugs off any pressure she might be feeling with a 115mph serve that leaves Kvitova rooted to the ground.

And she follows up with... a double fault. Friends star Jennifer Aniston doesn't look impressed.

*Williams 6-3 3-6 4-4 Kvitova

Kvitova isn't about to give this up without a fight, she has Williams sprawling to her right but the American can't make it. Williams is on the run again a point later as a searing Kvitova return fizzes beyond her.

It's deuce.

*Williams 6-3 3-6 4-4 Kvitova

Venus Williams takes a few deep breaths, she needs them after Petra Kvitova had her running across court - a challenge on either side, but it's Williams' point.

The American then steps up and slams a huge forehand past Kvitova to go 40-0 up.

Three aces, one clipped the frame - a perfect game for Petra Kvitova.

*Williams 6-3 3-6 4-4 Kvitova

Right then, it's make or break. Kvitova reaches for a new racquet, and slings a stormer of a serve past Venus, who doesn't even blink.

Ice cold, as a composed as anything, she fires down four unreturnable serves to hold. Wow.

Jeff Tarango

This crowd is on its feet, cheering for Venus.

Williams holds to lead

Kvitova looks weary. She stares at a backhand that sails long and Williams storms into a 40-0 lead.

It's Williams back in front.

Weren't we here a few hours ago with the other women's quarter-final (Stephens-Sevastova) with the exact same scoreline - 6-3 3-6 3-3?

Williams breaks

*Williams 6-3 3-6 3-3 Kvitova

Brilliant from Venus. She's standing up to Kvitova's every move now and earns herself a break point.

It was a swinging backhand return that did the damage. And a double fault follows.. out of nothing, Williams breaks.

Williams 6-3 3-6 2-3 *Kvitova

Cracking rally from these pair of former Grand Slam champions. Cross-court, high speed, inch-perfect, until Williams' effort goes awry.

Kvitova moves into a 30-0 lead, but can't scramble beyond her baseline quick enough to add to that advantage.

Jeff Tarango

Former professional tennis player on 5 live sports extra at Flushing Meadows

This crowd is really trying to get behind Venus and get her that energy, get her that comeback. But from what I've seen from Kvitova in the first five games of this set, she can win this tournament.

As Venus Williams' effort increases, so do the decibels in which she screams her way into every point.

She successfully navigates a couple of Kvitova bombardments to hold.
