Tyrone defender Sean O'Neill has been handed a three-month ban arising from an incident in a Sigerson Cup match.

The Higher Education Council ruled that O'Neill had verbally abused the referee after the game between St Mary's College and NUI Galway last week.

St Mary's were unhappy that referee Sean Carroll had not played more injury-time in the game in Galway.

O'Neill, who played for Tyrone against Kildare on Saturday, is expected to appeal against the ban.

The Dromore also played in all of Tyrone's McKenna Cup games last month.

Another St Mary's player Gavin Teague has also been handed a 12-week ban.

Ardboe native Teague played on the Tyrone minor team which won the All-Ireland title in 2008.
