100 Team GB contenders for London 2012: James Goddard
Swimming (200m individual medley)
Goddard won two Commonwealth gold medals in 2010, smashing the championship record in reclaiming the 200m backstroke title he won eight years earlier.
A shoulder injury forced him to give up the backstroke in 2011. He still has hopes of a first Olympic medal in the 200m individual medley, having reached the final in that event four years ago.
Stockport-based Goddard has never won a World Championship medal in a 50m pool; he came closest on his last attempt in 2011 when he swam through a long-standing shoulder injury to finish fourth in the 200m individual medley.
He did, however, earn a bronze medal in the 200m individual medley at the World Short Course Championships in 2008.
Goddard was born in the Indian Ocean nation of Seychelles, where his dad is from. Goddard's parents separated when he was five and he moved to England with his mum Elizabeth.
