Wada to review doping-ban policy
- From the section Olympics
World Anti-Doping Agency director general David Howman reveals Wada is reviewing its rules and may increase penalties for athletes caught doping if there is enough international will.
Howman states the body exists purely to enforce international consistency with drug bans and says the British Olympic Association's policy of lifetime Olympic bans for athletes previously caught cheating was inconsistent with the rest of the world. The BOA lost its battle with Wada at the Court of Arbitration for Sport on Monday.
Howman clarifies that any increase in the length of bans would have to "not lead to an immediate challenge in the court of human rights" and require widespread backing, insisting any argument against its current policy is a "dead duck" because the International Olympic Committee have approved Wada's rules since 2004.
