Did you know?

  • Triathlon races combine swimming, cycling and running, in that order. In London, the triathlon begins and ends in Hyde Park.
  • First up is a 1500m swim in the Serpentine lake followed by a seven-lap 40km bike ride around a course that takes in Buckingham Palace. It ends with a four-lap 10km run back around the Serpentine.
  • Fifty-five athletes will compete in the men's and women's events and there are no heats - it is just a one-off race to determine the winner.
  • The six events held since its Olympic debut have been won by athletes from six different countries: Canada, Switzerland, New Zealand, Austria, Germany and Australia.
  • Great Britain has high hopes of a gold medal in 2012 given that Alistair Brownlee and Helen Jenkins are the current men's and women's world champions.
