BBC Sport - Rio 2016 Olympics: Brendan Irvine says early 'stinging shots' hastened Rio defeat

Irvine sunk by 'stinging shots'

Belfast boxer Brendan Irvine says he was unable to recover from an early series of "stinging shots" from Uzbekistan's Shakhobidin Zoirov in Rio defeat.

Irvine, 20, suffered a disappointing Olympic debut as the classy Uzbek fighter clinched a deserved 30-26, 30-27, 30-27 win in the last-16 flyweight bout.

"I had a good game plan coming into the fight but in the first round I got caught with some stinging shots and it sort of went out the window a bit after that," said Irvine, who admitted that he is still adjusting after moving up to flyweight earlier this year.
