St Helens centre Tom Armstrong has signed for Swinton Lions.

The 22-year-old was in Saints' 19-man squad for the Grand Final defeat by Leeds at Old Trafford.

He has decided to quit Super League to return to university while playing part-time in the Championship for the newly-promoted Lions.

Armstrong - on a dual contract with Leigh last season - made four starts and seven substitute appearances for Saints, scoring six tries.

Swinton coach Steve McCormack said: "Tom could have stayed in the Super League environment but he has chosen to further his education, which says a lot about him.

"He still has something to prove and is excited about playing for us - and we're excited to have him."

Swinton lifted the Championship One title last season - their first trophy in 25 years - and will ground share with Leigh Centurions in the Championship next season.
