Luctonians want more of a cutting edge from their backs

Luctonians' pack have been dominant in National Two North this season

Luctonians director of rugby Alex Davidson is looking for more of a cutting edge from his back division.

Luctonians, fourth in National Two North, missed the chance to close the gap on the leaders when they were beaten 31-14 at Stockport last weekend.

"We went through 14 phases and then made a half-break through Dan Smith," Davidson told BBC Hereford & Worcester.

"We tried to push the offload when, if we'd held on for another two phases, we'd have walked in under the sticks."

Lucs led 14-13 at the interval but Stockport ran in 18 unanswered points after the break.

"The wind was at our backs in the first half," he pointed out. "We said it should be a four-try half, but we didn't get there.

"We scored two and there were already signs that their strong running was causing us problems as we were having trouble laying them on the ground.

Davidson admits lack of cutting edge

"We were playing very much a standing up game. It was never going to hold up for the second half."

Luctonians have a chance to get things back on track this Saturday (5 November) when they bid to keep up their 100 per cent home record against bottom side Hull Ionians at Mortimer Park.

"We have to play on that home record," said Davidson. "It is really good so far and we have to keep it that way.

"We need it to make up for last weekend. We want to be top of the pile come Christmas.

"If we can get five points, we'd close that gap on the top two, who are just pulling away slightly."
