On-loan Cornish Pirates winger Rhodri McAtee staked his claim for a Championship recall with a hat-trick as Redruth beat Southend 49-6.

McAtee and Tom Duncan scored first-half tries and Aaron Penberthy kicked 11 points as they led 21-3 at half time.

The Welshman scored two more after the break along with one for Nathan Pedley as Penberthy added eight more points.

"I do really want to go and train hard and get back in the Pirates team," McAtee told BBC Radio Cornwall.

"As much as I love it down at Redruth, the Pirates are my team and I want to be on the pitch scoring tries for them."

The victory was Redruth's second in a row in National Two South as they retained sixth place in the table.

McAtee's loan spell was set to end after the Southend game, but it is yet to be decided if he will stay on any longer at the Rec.

"I've got to commend him on his application at Redruth," Pirates elite performance director Chris Stirling told BBC South West.

"He's always available for selection to us and we'll have a look at that at this week unfolds."
