Once again, sadly not shocked, not to see Andrew Trimble starting. Has had one of his best, if not best season to date with Ulster! O'Gara, a great servant to the game, but lets move on once and for all! Come on Ireland!
@108. KennyIt has been suggested on this board perhaps it's because at 28, Steenson is considered too old and that Jackson/Madigan are the future. To be fair, it's only this season he's been starting to show good form with ball in hand too. Always a great kicker and distributor though. As a Chiefs fan, I think he should have been given a chance before, let alone now.
Good choice at #10. Madigan is a very exciting, confident, attacking player whose goal kicking stats are 83%. This year he has had huge game time in the Rabo and Heineken Cup (that in Kearney's absence), is the leading points scorer in the Rabo and seems to score tries at vital times. So it doesn't seem too early to give him a go.
Can anyone explain to me why the Exeter Chiefs stand-off Gareth Steenson is never considered for Ireland, the guy is devastating with the ball from hand and from the deck and he single handedly destroyed Harlequins at the weekend, is it because he plays in England and not Ireland
99, 102, 103, thanks for doing the maths. Would appear both teams have big incentive to run in a lot of points this weekend. It's going to be a weekend of attempted running rugby and monstrous defence.
@105: Completely disagree. He's been superb in both attack and defence for Ulster this season, and always did a decent job for Ireland.
I cannot understand the clamour for Trimble, except for socio reasons. He is poor as last man, not a great footballer and weak in contact.
@102: beat me to it taff!
@99:Raziel, currently England's points difference is 17 superior to that of Wales. So, as it stands Wales would only need to win by 9 points. Therefore if (big if), Wales get a win at Murrayfield, and Italy are competitive at Twickers, there's still everything to play for (from a Welsh perspective). Hopefully it will induce an entertaining game of rugby too!
@99 ... Your maths needs some work ...Wales need to beat England by 1/2 the points difference ! ... Thus cutRecently it sits at 9
@98 i have nothing against steenson, just that there are already 3 younger outhalves in ireland that are good enough. In Ireland we have a problem with blooding youngsters, donncha ryan didn't start a test match until he was 27, sexton was 24. We've gone 4 years with the same 2 10's, we have a golden opportunity to give a 21 year old some experience rather than using a stop gap solution.
