Rhys Patchell should consider switching from fly-half to full-back, says Mark Hammett

Cardiff Blues director of rugby Mark Hammett says Rhys Patchell's future could be at full-back rather than fly-half.

Hammett made the statement at a Blues press conference to mark the arrival of fellow New Zealander, versatile back Gareth Anscombe.

"If I was his financial manager, I'd say the best money he can make is at full-back," said Hammett.

"When you look at the depth in those areas, perhaps that's where it is."

But Hammett, who took over at Cardiff Arms Park for the 2014-15 season, says players must be happy with the position in which they play.

"You've still got to love the position you're playing in and you've got to be dedicated to learning that position," said Hammett.

"Those are discussions we will have with Patchell."

Patchell, 21, has won two Wales caps as a replacement having made his mark at 10 for Blues.

Anscombe, 23, who qualifies for Wales via his mother, also prefers the fly-half berth.

However, the new arrival will make his debut at full-back in the Pro12 against Edinburgh on Friday.
