Cornish Pirates' rugby players have been learning how to be referees as part of their pre-season training.

Players at the Championship club have been taking part in a special course to ensure they know the rules.

"Ironically, we were pretty good last year, we had the lowest number of yellow cards in the Championship," director of rugby Ian Davies said.

"The referees course will hopefully reaffirm that the boys do know the laws of the game," Davies told BBC Cornwall.

The Pirates ended last season in eighth place in English rugby's second tier.

"We were below average in terms of the number of penalties conceded in a game last season. The misconception is that we give a lot of penalties away, but we don't," Davies added.
