Winger Tom Varndell says Bristol are "sick" of failing to win promotion from the Championship and are determined to finally get up this season.

Bristol lost to Worcester in the last minute of May's play-off final to miss out on promotion to the Premiership for the second successive campaign.

Varndell signed for Bristol from Wasps and is determined to get the club back into English rugby's top flight.

"I don't want to do two seasons in the Championship," said the 29-year-old.

"I've signed a two-year contract and I don't want to do any more than one season in the Championship," Varndell told BBC Points West.

"The boys don't want another season in the Championship. I think everyone is sick to the back teeth of playing in the Championship and losing in the play-off final."

Varndell wants Premiership try record

Varndell says he has been impressed by the set up of his new club, who begin their season on Sunday against Bedford, and is confident they can finally end their absence from the Premiership following their relegation in 2009.

They have since lost in the play-off final in four out of the last six seasons, having finished top of the Championship table in each of those four seasons.

"Bristol, as a city, needs Bristol Rugby to be in the Premiership," Varndell added. "The supporters have had enough of it. Everyone is pulling in the right direction and wants Premiership rugby.

The wing is one of the most successful players in Premiership history with 425 points from 169 appearances, and is five tries short of Mark Cueto's record of 90 tries.

And former England man Varndell is desperate for that record.

"For me personally, I want to be playing Premiership rugby," he said. "I'm five tries off, it's painful thinking about it. I want that record badly."

Meanwhile, Bristol have confirmed the signing of versatile forward James Phillips, who has joined from London Scottish after a successful trial at the club.
