Newport Gwent Dragons forwards coach Ceri Jones says he was not disheartened despite his side losing their fifth Pro12 game of the season.

The Dragons were defeated 31-27 by the Scarlets on Sunday but Jones feels they are on the right track.

"We know how close we've been in the last few weeks. We're not quite getting the rub of the green," he said.

"I think we're not that far away and hopefully we can get on a bit of a roll on the back of that."

The former Newport prop believes that a strong European campaign and a positive start against former Heineken Cup winners Brive in the European Challenge Cup at Rodney Parade can rejuvenate their season.

Jones has fond memories of the competition having won it twice with his former club Harlequins and holds the competition in high regard.

"We've got a good record in Europe. We want to keep that going and hopefully that can kick start us for the league as well," Jones continued.

"I think it's a really good competition to be involved in. It gives everyone a fresh lease of life to a certain extent, so it's exciting."

Brive are seventh in France's Top 14 in which they have won four games while Dragons lie 10th in the Pro12 having won once this season.

Jones had high praise for Wales wing Hallam Amos' recent performances for the Dragons, ahead of a game that could turn their season around.

"He's been excellent for us, he's an ultimate professional and great to work with. I'm not sure what are in the Welsh guys plans but I know if I was coach, he'd certainly be in mine."
