Premiership club Gloucester have signed former Australia prop Salesi Ma'afu after he was released by Cardiff Blues.

Ma'afu, 33, played six times for the Welsh region, last featuring in March.

He joined the Pro12 side in 2015 after leaving Toulon by mutual consent following a conviction for assault.

The former Northampton Saints player - who helped them win the Premiership and the Challenge Cup - won 14 caps with Australia after his international debut in 2007, playing at the 2011 World Cup.

Ma'afu, brother of Saints player Campese, switched codes from rugby league to union as a youngster.

Cardiff Blues are currently sixth in the Pro12 table, with four wins from their first six league games this season, while Gloucester are 10th in the English top flight.

The Welsh region have Wales squad member Scott Andrews, veteran Tongan Taufa'ao Filise and Wales under-20 prospect Dillon Lewis as tight-head options.
