London Welsh avoided liquidation in September after paying off debts

Bleddyn Phillips has stood down as chairman of Championship rugby union club London Welsh.

The news comes a day after Welsh were granted more time to pay outstanding debts following a winding-up petition from HM Revenue & Customs.

On Monday, an insolvency court granted the Richmond-based club an adjournment "for a number of weeks".

Phillips leaves London Welsh after five years as chairman, including two seasons in the Premiership.
