Worcester Warriors lock forward Donncha O'Callaghan has signed a new deal with the Premiership club, at the age of 38.

The former Ireland and British & Irish Lions international, who has captained the side in recent weeks in the continued absence of GJ Van Velze, has signed an undisclosed-length contract.

O'Callaghan initially arrived at Sixways in 2015 on a two-year deal after 17 seasons with Munster.

"Donncha is a phenomenon," said Worcester director of rugby Gary Gold.

"He must be one of the most professional rugby players in the world. The manner in which he prepares for matches - mentally and physically - is an outstanding example for any young player."

The 94-times capped O'Callaghan, who was made skipper following Gold's arrival in January, has proved an inspiring on-field leader for the Warriors.

Warriors have picked up 17 points from seven games, including wins over Bristol and Bath, which has helped them avoid relegation for a second straight season.

"Our recent form has been reasonably encouraging," O'Callaghan said. "That provides us with a decent platform for next season.

"People often talk about what Warriors can become but it really is time we started to deliver consistent success on the field. Nothing else is acceptable. I believe we have the staff and the squad to compete next season."

O'Callaghan follows fly-half Ryan Mills, prop Ryan Bower, scrum-half Michael Dowsett and hooker Joe Taufete'e in agreeing new terms at Sixways recent weeks.
