BBC Sport - Barcelona World Race: Team races to Alex Thomson's aid

Thomson awaits help off Brazil coast

British sailor Alex Thomson awaits help in the South Atlantic Ocean as he tries to motor his stricken boat to Salvador.

Thomson shows exactly what went wrong off the coast of Brazil to end his hopes in the Barcelona World Race earlier this week.

A support team will meet Thomson and fellow skipper Pepe Ribes, whose engine is consuming the vessel's limited emergency fuel reserve, with a rescue craft carrying extra provisions and supplies.

Thomson and Ribes were leading the rest of the field, having broken two race records already, when their mast fell overboard.

Managing director of Alex Thomson Racing, Stewart Hosford told the team website: "Alex and Pepe are safe from the initial incident but they are still 300 miles off the coast of Brazil in a yacht with no mast, so there is more work to do to secure the boys safety and that of the boat."
