Northern Ireland sailors Ryan Seaton and Matt McGovern have won gold at the Olympic classes regatta in Mallorca.

Competing for Ireland in the 49er class, the pair scored a race win in the last event of the fleet series on a cold and rainswept Bay of Palma.

The crew are obliged to compete in the medal race finale on Saturday despite being assured of gold following a strong 15 race series over five days.

The London 2012 duo have qualified Ireland for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

Over seventy 49er crews started the series on Monday before the field was reduced to the top 25 boats for the finals that ended today.

At last September's World Championships in Spain, Seaton, from Carrickfergus, and Bangor native McGovern secured Irish 49er qualification for the Rio Games as they finished eighth overall.

Next up for the Ballyholme crew, who finished a creditable 14th at the London Games, is the European Championships in Barcelona later this month.
