Jimmy Robertson said playing close friend and practice partner Mark Davis was far from ideal after reaching the third round of the UK Championship.
Robertson, the world number 36, raced into a 4-0 lead against his fellow Sussex-based pro and went on to close out a 6-2 win.
"It is difficult playing a good mate but you've just got to get on with it," said Robertson, 30.
"You've got no friends on the table when you're out there."
Robertson, whose best ranking event performance is making the last 16, added: "Mark's a great player and we practise together all the time, so we know each other's games.
"It's not nice to play each other but I'm just pleased to get the win.
"He's obviously going to be gutted but he'll want me to do well in the tournament now. Well, I hope he does anyway."
Robertson, who is from Bexhill-on-Sea, will face Oliver Lines on Tuesday after the 21-year-old was a shock winner against world number three Judd Trump in the second round.
"I know Oli's a good young player and hungry for success, so it will be tough," Robertson said.
"Everyone would have been expecting Judd to come through but Oli was always more than capable of winning."
