She's back! And she's not missing you, whoever you are. But what else is Stacie Orrico not missing?

TOTP: Now you're famous, you probably don't ever have to queue for things any more. What's that like?
Stacie: Ah, well, sometimes I do. I think that point was definitely proven wrong at the airport yesterday trying to get into London! Hahaha! No, it's definitely very nice, especially being someone like me who can have a hard time standing around. It's always an honour if someone takes the time to get you ahead in line. But honestly, sometimes they don't. And in America, there's a lot of places - because I'm only 20, there's a lot of places I can't go to, because you can't go into a club or a bar until you're 21 in the States. It's crazy, people would think, "oh, she's an artist, she can get in anywhere", but there's a lot of places, if I don't have an ID, I can't go anywhere!
Stacie and friends queue fruitlessly outside an over-21s venue.

TOTP: What about doing your domestic chores? Do you have someone to do that for you these days, or do you still do that yourself?
Stacie: Nope! I do it myself, and actually it's really therapeutic for me when I go home. I really love just getting to come home and get organised - you know, even just cleaning up the kitchen and the bathroom, it feels...you realise, when you get home, you really missed those more domestic jobs.

TOTP: How about random idiots trying to chat you up? Do you find now that you're famous, people are too scared to do that?
Stacie: Oh, no! [Giggles.] I think that guys, the annoying type - the idiots, as you would say - who just wanna chat up any girl. They really are very brave!
TOTP: So fame or no fame, they won't let that stop them?
Stacie: Yeah, definitely!
TOTP: What about the other side - do you find it a problem that people are too shy to come and talk to you even if you'd like them to?
Stacie: You know, I really think it has a lot to do with the way you carry yourself. And I think that even for me, being in the industry for a long time, there are some artists that are HUGE superstars, but they don't carry themselves in such a way that's, like, "oh, are you gonna try to talk to me?" And then there's artists who feel very intimidating to talk to, and they're not even that big stars, they just have this air about them that's like, "oh, you don't deserve to speak with me". And I think those are the ones who probably end up having a hard time getting a date!
Lee Ryan. No comment.

TOTP: As you say, you've been in the industry for a long time, but presumably when you started out there was a point when you were doing small gigs to a handful of people. Do you miss that?
Stacie: Yeah! I still love it when I get the chance to play a little showcase or something like that, and get to play in a small, more intimate setting, just because I feel like that feels the most appropriate for the style of music that I love the most, and for the music that's always inspired me - jazz music and blues music and music that was played more in that setting. Even though in the past I've had dancers on stage and done the 10 clothes changes kind of stuff, that isn't what I'm going to be doing on this album, it isn't very me, and so playing in a more closed setting is always really fun.

TOTP: We read that between albums you went back and you got a day-job working in a restaurant. What do you miss about that, and what don't you miss?
Stacie: I think that I do miss having something to interact with. I love interacting with people, I love meeting new people, but I find that in my job here in the music industry, I wind up having to talk about myself a lot! Usually people want to know about me and what's going on with me, and I loved the fact that I was able to just learn about other people. I'd have these cute little eldery couples and they'd show me pictures of their grandkids, or the lady who came in and got fish and chips every day, and she had, like, 50 cats, and she had this photo album she'd carry around of her cats, and loads of interesting people that you'd get to interact with, so I miss that. And I don't miss the whole, like, bussing thing ['Bussing' is the American word for clearing tables. - Americanophile Ed.], like having to come in and bus in between and all of that. You've got people's half eaten food all over your hands. It's kinda nasty, I don't miss that.
A waitress with appropriate goodies. TOTP: Do you miss the tips?
Stacie: [sarcastically] Yeah, right! They were so good. I definitely don't miss my paycheck.
TOTP: Do you ever find yourself doing a gig now and thinking, "hang on, why isn't anybody throwing money at me?"
Stacie: Haha! Exactly. I should put out a hat on the edge of the stage.

TOTP: You must have done a lot of travelling when you were promoting your earlier albums. When you were at home did you find that you didn't miss being in different places all the time, adjusting to different timezones, different foods, things like that?
Stacie: You know, it's just crazy. I feel like the timing of everything has just been perfect. By the time I took a break, I was so, so ready to just be home, and be with my family, and get into a routine, and eat homecooked food every day, and never get out of my pyjamas, and be as normal and incognito as possible. And then after a couple of years of taking a break...I mean, if somebody would have come to me a month before I felt ready to get back into the music industry, I would have been like, [panicky] "No! I'm not ready!", but then as soon as I felt ready, I felt completely excited to get back on the road and get back to trying new crazy foods that I couldn't pronounce and all that, so I'm really enjoying it.

TOTP: What about those nights where you'd be sat in with a facepack, and the phone would ring and you'd be all "no, really, I'm just getting ready to go out" when really you were just settling down for a night in front of the TV - do you miss those?
Stacie: You mean during my time off?
TOTP: Yes.
Stacie: It's actually funny because I lived with my sister while she was going to college, and we just lived right off of campus and I kind of had my faux college experience! Minus the education. It's funny, because if you asked any of my friends, they wouldn't say I was, like, a party pooper, they would definitely say, "oh yeah, she was the one who usually wanted to stay in." They'd all be going out and going dancing and I'd be, like, "oh, I want to stay home. I'm tired! It just went to show how exhausted I was, because it took me like a full year to recover.
Someone in a facepack who isn't Stacie. Two days ago.

TOTP: Do you miss being able to read the tabloids, knowing that you wouldn't be in them?
Stacie: You know what? I just don't read them anyway. It kind of just disgusts me. Either it's a load of crap and everything they're writing is totally not true, and I just feel terrible for the people they're writing about, God forbid I find something about myself, or maybe it is something true, but it's usually something HORRIBLE that you're just, like, "leave the poor people alone to get a divorce in peace!" or whatever. I usually, even just out of respect for my fellow artists and entertainers [giggles] try to not read that.

TOTP: Presumably you have people now to do things for you, so do you miss the little things, like being able to go into a shop and buy something?
NotStacie, doing some shopping. Stacie: Again, those are things that I genuinely enjoy doing, and I don't have any problem if somebody is doing really well and when they get home the best way for them to rest is just to hire somebody to come cook for them or something. That's totally fine, I'm not saying that that's a problem, but for me, I feel it keeps me sane to be able to go and run to the store and do my grocery shopping and iron my own clothes and clean my own kitchen and stock my own fridge, and y'know, those are all things that I really do value and enjoy because they're the things that make me feel like a normal person! [Giggles.]
