Lately I’ve hit social media fatigue. I’m tired of being inundated with every random person’s take on every detail of a travel experience before I even have it. Don’t get me wrong, Trip Advisor and Yelp and all their permutations have given me invaluable insight into destinations. But where’s the mystery? Where’s the romance?
That's why I'm in love with the site Hotel Haiku. You get one picture and one 5-7-5 ditty meant to evoke the vibe of the hotel. Then there's a link for booking. Practical it's not. But there's something attractive about throwing caution to the wind and committing to an adventure. So instead of booking based on laundry lists of plunge pools and spa menus, perhaps you take a chance on this:
Gothic defiance
In its desert location
A dead rose blossoms
That's all you have to go on for a modernist retreat in Joshua Tree, California. But it's enough information to pique my interest.
The site got me thinking about how I'd describe some of my favourite hotels. So I decided to give it a try. Here's one for The Standard NY:
