Old Masters, new thoughts in Berlin

In Berlin, stay in central Mitte in the weird and wonderful rooms of Arte Luise Kunsthotel.

The Renaissance Faces exhibition sees a veritable supergroup of Old Masters come to Berlin’s Bode Museum, with portraits by Botticelli, Filippo Lippi and Leonardo da Vinci all on display.

The exhibition, which explores what Renaissance portraits say about the psychology of their subjects, fulfils a long-overdue mission for Bode Museum, which was originally conceived as a centre for Renaissance art. Murdered nobles, adulterers and ugly portraits with cruel nicknames are among the faces you’ll encounter in this show of 150 pieces from 52 museums and private collections.

How to
Renaissance Faces opens at the Bode Museum on 25 August and runs until 20 November (admission £13; 10am-6pm, open until 10pm on Thursdays).

Stay in central Mitte in the weird and wonderful rooms of Arte Luise Kunsthotel, around 15 minutes’ walk from the Bode Museum (from £90).
