You don't have to be an art aficionado to know when you have seen a masterpiece.

Admire the turquoise water and snow-capped peaks of Banff National Park with an escape to Lake Louise, a setting with serious aesthetic value.

Brighten things up with an overnight stay for two in an executive room at Lake Louise Inn and a bottle of wine upon arrival ($99). There is a wide spectrum of outdoor activity located right outside your door at these mountain accommodations, only a two-hour drive from Calgary.

"This is one of the most awe inspiring and scenically overwhelming places on earth," says BBC Travel. "People come here for all sorts of reasons: To ski, climb and hike on the mountains, to raft and kayak the rivers, to camp among the trees or explore on their mountain bikes. But most come simply to look, to stand in awe of the sheer beauty of this amazing place."

A hearty breakfast of waffles or eggs at Legends Restaurant is the perfect primer for a day on the trails or the slopes. Put some layers on and board the complimentary shuttle to The Lake Louise Ski Area, just ten minutes from the inn, and enjoy more than 4,200 acres of terrain and 139 runs. Or, take a spin on the outdoor ice skating rink to get your cheeks rosy.

Tone things down in the afternoon with a dip in the heated indoor pool or whirlpool before grabbing an après-ski cocktail at Explorers Lounge. Then, feel fully saturated after indulging in pizza, calzones or lasagna at Timberwolf Pizza and Pasta Café. Or, add some local colour to your getaway and head to the village for restaurants, shopping and nightlife.

Deciding to go on this escape to the Canadian Rockies is as easy as painting by numbers.
