Quito, Ecuador, this year’s Cultural Capital of the Americas, gets a new luxury boutique hotel when Casa Gangotena opens on 10 October in a Neo-classical mansion on the Plaza San Francisco. The 31 rooms have Art Deco finishes, and original details have been restored throughout the property, along with modern touches such as solar panels for heating water. 

On 1 October, the Mercer Street Hotel, formerly the Mountbatten, officially reopens in London’s Covent Garden after a £15 million renovation with 137 rooms. Eight large suites overlook the Seven Dials, one of London’s top people-watching locales. 

On 27 September, the historic Greenbrier hotel in West Virginia, home to the Bunker, the super-secret fallout shelter for members of Congress during the Cold War, introduced 26 Windsor Club rooms over two floors. Club guests have a private check-in desk, access to the Virginia Room for concierge service and dining, and a private terrace and garden. In 2012, the Greenbrier Presidential Express will provide train service between Washington, DC and the resort.

The ITC Mughal in Agra, India also opened a new section of the hotel this month, on 16 September. The new wing is called Khwab Mahal (Palace of Dreams) with 42 rooms and suites, including the Royal Spa suites, which come with in-suite treatment rooms, and the Presidential Suites, with gardens, plunge pools and a private lobby entrance.

The Sifawy Boutique Hotel opened in Oman on 16 September. Located on the Arabian Sea in the Jebel Sifah area, the 55 rooms and suites have views of the marina, and the As Sammak beach restaurant serves fresh seafood.
