The Park Hyatt Ningbo Resort and Spa opens 10 January on Dongqian Lake in China’s Zhejiang Province, a scenic recreation area two-and-a-half hours from Shanghai. The 236 villa rooms have traditional roofs and lake views. The hotel also has a Yue Hu Spa and a tea house serving both Chinese and Western-style tea.

In London, the Belgraves, from Thompson Hotels, will open around 16 January in tony Belgravia. The 85 rooms are decorated by designer Tara Bernerd in slightly masculine colours and textures, and top British chef Mark Hix will open Hix Belgravia and a bar complete with “cigar garden”.

Starting this month, travellers can book the new Safari of Silence from Expert Africa. The 10-day trek goes to the Nxai and Makgadikgadi salt pans of the northern Kalahari desert. The night sky is especially spectacular so far from light and other types of pollution.

The Element Miami International Airport opens on 26 January, near the airport, west of downtown and South Beach. All of the rooms have kitchens and free wifi, and unlike many airport or business hotels, the hotel has a large outdoor pool and lounge area.

The Trump International Hotel and Tower Toronto opens 31 January, with 261 rooms and suites in a glass-clad 65-storey tower downtown. The Quartz Crystal Spa covers two floors and has a heated salt water lap pool, along with 12 treatment rooms and “spa concierges”. Guests can also partake of the Trumpian extras like nanny services and personal shoppers.
