The uber-luxe Viceroy Maldives opened 2 April on the private island of Vagaru at the northern edge of the Maldives, an hour’s flight from Male. The 61 villas are either perched on the beach or built directly out over the blue lagoon, including the spa suites that overlook the Indian Ocean. The resort has five restaurants and a wine cellar, plus several activities, from diving with whale sharks and dolphins to sunrise yoga by the water.

For a completely different experience, the NoMad Hotel opened 1 April in one of New York’s busiest districts near Madison Square Park. While the hotel interiors, library and rooms were designed by grand master Jacques Garcia to have Parisian flair (many have a claw foot tub in the room, faux garret-style), it is the restaurant that is getting a lot of early buzz, with rave reviews already coming from the New York Times and top food blogs. Expect that excitement to increase when the roof-top cupola opens this summer for private dining.

The Hotel Indigo Edinburgh opens 14 April in the city’s central New Town neighbourhood, not far from the shopping on Princes Street and the main train station. Originally five private residences dating from the early 19th Century, the now 60 rooms and suites are decorated with bright pops of orange and natural woods, and have sleek, white bathrooms. The Turquoise Thistle is an all-day restaurant, cafe and cocktail bar.

The Revere opens in Boston on 18 April near Boston Common in the Theater District. Formerly a Radisson, the 355 guest rooms and suites all have balconies and Shakespeare quotations on the walls, and the hotel is opening a private pool on the roof for guests only, along with two theatres. Everyone is welcome in the Emerald Lounge, which serves tapas and cocktails, and a patio will open for the summer.

Calling all foodies: the 16th annual World Gourmet Summit runs 23 April to 3 May in Singapore, featuring the likes of nose-to-tail king Fergus Henderson and celeb chef Marco Pierre White. It’s not too late to make reservations for the Penfolds Wine Dinner featuring Henderson and local celebrity chef Douglas Tay, or the Champagne dinner with three Chinese master chefs.
