At Achiltibuie, the Summer Isles Hotel is a very special place, with beautifully decorated rooms, cracking views, a wee pub and a Michelin-starred restaurant with a stratospheric reputation for seafood (01854 622282; summerisleshotel.co.uk; Achiltibuie; Apr-Oct; from £155).

Getting around

Inverness is the transport hub for the region with Citylink (citylink. co.uk) and Rapsons (rapsons. co.uk) the main bus operators. Your best bet, though, is to hire a car in Inverness (£25 per day; sharpsreliablewrecks.co.uk).

Getting there

British Airways and easyJet fly to Inverness from London, Edinburgh and Bristol (from £35; easyjet.com). National Express coaches run to Inverness from Edinburgh (£10) and London (from £16.50; nationalexpress. com). Citylink buses connect Inverness with Dornoch (£9) and Ullapool (£12).
