This sprawling Shintō shrine is arguably Japan’s most arresting visual spectacle. Thousands of vermillion torii (Shintō shrine gates) line paths that crisscross this mountain in southeast Kyoto. Visit the main hall and then head up the hill toward the summit. Be prepared to be utterly mesmerised – it is quite unlike anything else on earth. If you have time, do the circular pilgrimage route around the top of the mountain. (Greg Elms/LPI) (Credit: Greg Elms/LPI)
